'''Conflict of Interest Policy for Board Members, Officers, and Executives'''

The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable organization whose board members, officers, and executives are chosen to serve the public purposes to which it is dedicated. These persons have a duty to conduct the affairs of the Foundation in a manner consistent with such purposes and not to advance their personal interests. This conflict of interest policy is intended to permit the Foundation and its board members, officers, and executives to identify, evaluate, and address any real, potential, or apparent conflicts of interest that might, in fact or in appearance, call into question their duty of undivided loyalty to the Foundation.

1. Covered Persons

This policy applies to the Foundation’s board members, officers, and executives. Each Covered Person shall be required to acknowledge, not less than annually, that he or she has read and is in compliance with this policy on the [[pledge of personal commitment]]. This form shall be available for public consideration.

2. Covered Transactions

This policy applies to transactions between the Foundation and a Covered Person, or between the Foundation and another party with which a Covered Person has a significant relationship, or between another party and the Covered Person if the transaction could reasonably be expected to impact the Foundation. A Covered Person is considered to have a significant relationship with another party if:

a) the other party is a family member, including a spouse, parent, sibling, child, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, great-grandchild, in- law, or domestic partner;

b) the other party is an entity in which the Covered Person has a material financial interest. This includes entities in which the Covered Person and all individuals or entities having significant relationships with the Covered Person own, in the aggregate, more than 10 percent; or

c) the Covered Person is an officer, director, trustee, partner, or employee of the other party.

A Covered Transaction also includes any other transaction in which there may be an actual or perceived conflict of interest, including any transaction in which the interests of a Covered Person may be seen as competing or at odds with the interests of the Foundation.

3. Disclosure, Refrain from Influence, and Recusal

When a Covered Person becomes aware of a proposed Covered Transaction, he or she has a duty to take the following actions:

a) immediately disclose the existence and circumstances of such Covered Transaction to the Foundation’s board in writing

b) refrain from using his or her personal influence to encourage the Foundation to enter into the Covered Transaction

c) physically excuse himself or herself from any discussions regarding the Covered Transaction except to answer questions, including board discussions and decisions on the subject

In order to assist the Foundation in identifying potential Covered Transactions, each Covered Person annually shall complete a [[Conflict of Interest Questionnaire]] provided by the Foundation, and shall update such Questionnaire as necessary to reflect changes during the course of the year. Questionaires shall be submitted to the Foundation's legal counsel who shall be responsible for their custody. Completed Questionnaires shall be available for inspection by any board member, and may be reviewed by the Foundation’s legal counsel.

4. Standard for Approval of Covered Transactions

The Foundation may enter into a Covered Transaction where a) such Transaction does not constitute an act of self dealing, and b) the board determines, acting without the participation or influence of the Covered Person and based on comparable market data, that such transaction is fair and reasonable to the Foundation. The board shall document the basis for this determination in the minutes of the meeting at which the Covered Transaction is considered, and shall consult with the Foundation’s legal advisor as necessary to ensure that the Transaction does not constitute an act of self dealing.

5. Administration of Policy

This policy shall be administered by the board, which shall be responsible for the
following:

a) reviewing reports regarding the Conflict of Interest Questionnaires

b) receiving disclosures of proposed Covered Transactions

c) reviewing proposed Covered Transactions to determine whether they meet the above-described standard

d) maintaining minutes, pledge of personal commitment, and such other documentation as may be necessary and appropriate to document its review of Covered Transactions

(e) reviewing the operation of this policy and making changes from time to time as it may deem appropriate

== Lokale afdelingen ==

;[[0409/En]]:orphaned redirect toward [[Wikimedia Quarto/1/En-1]], could be deleted
;[[1mil]]:orphaned redirect toward [[Press releases/1M articles]], could be deleted
;[[2004]]:useless page, could be deleted

== A ==

;[[About Wikimedia/It:]]:orphaned redirect toward [[Informazioni su Wikimedia]], could be deleted
;[[About Wikimedia-ja]]:orphaned redirect toward [[ウィキメディア財団]], could be deleted
;[[Awards]]:needs to be updated or to redirect to [[:m:Trophy box]]

== B ==

;[[Bank history/2004]] and its subpages:is it still a draft?
;[[Board letter]], [[Lettre du board]] (fr):orphaned, inactive pages. What was the original aim?
;[[Board minutes]]:orphaned redirect toward [[Meetings]], could be deleted

== C ==

;[[:Category:Wikimedia fundraising]]:now empty (see [[:Category:Fundraising]]), to be deleted
;[[Communiqués de presse/Angela Beesley démissionne du Conseil d'administration]]:must be replaced by [[Press releases/Angela Beesley resigns from Wikimedia Foundation board/Français]]
;[[Current staff]]:clean up, could be a very useful page

== D ==

;[[Designated agent]]:orphaned page. Should it be linked, merged, deleted?
;[[Development team]]:needs clean up (check who is active, what is done by who)
;[[Donations]]:redirects toward [[Fundraising]], useless
;[[Download]]:quite orphaned page (site map). Aphaia said this could be "filled with materials" instead of being deleted, but is it useful?

== F ==

;[[Finance report]]:2006 pending. The page has [[:Category:Finance report|its own category]], which contains only this article. Re-cat to parent cat [[:Category:Wikimedia finances]]?

;[[It is forbidden to take pictures!]], [[It is forbidden to take pictures !]], [[It is forbidden to take pictures !/Ru]], [[V Louvru je zakázáno fotit]], [[Verbot der Fotoaufnahme im Louvre]], [[Proibito fotografare le opere esposte al Louvre]], [[Proibição de tirar fotos no Louvre]] and the original [[Interdiction de prises photographiques au Louvre]]:Jimbo said he would have deleted the first page if he were admin here. A set of useless, "orphaned" pages (only linked to each other). Must have served as a "news". Could be deleted.

== J ==

;[[Job openings]]:linked on many chinese and japanese pages, but outdated. Is is still useful on this website?

== L ==

;[[Legal report]]:what's the aim of this page featuring a nice picture of soufron? :) It has a (very small) history for 2005, but I guess it's now on meta/Internal/secret juriwiki place...
;[[Local chapters]]:there so much information on meta, not mentionning the redundant pages here. Needs a clean up, maybe add some info from meta

== M ==

;[[MediaWiki]]:redundant with the content of [[our projects]], could be deleted IMO
;[[Meetings]]:kind of archive page, only one line for 2006. Is a Meeting page needed on this website since we have [[:m:Wikimedia meetings]]? If yes, needs upgrade and translation; if no, well...
;[[Membership]], [[Membres]] (fr):seems to be outdated, useless pages which could be deleted?

;[[Newsletter]]:orphaned redirect toward [[Wikimedia Quarto]], could be deleted
;[[Nouvelles]]:is now known as [[Actualités]], could be deleted and unlinked from the site map

== O ==

;[[Our projects]]:Ok, nice page, but isn't it a bit... small. A chunky bacon. Definitely needs an upgrade to v2.0 :)
;[[Opinion/Right or wrong use of intellectual property]] and [[Opinion/Creative Commons -NC Licenses Considered Harmful]]:blanked pages, only one link from a page that is not in user namespace, jimbo said he would habe deleted them if he were admin here. could be deleted IMO

;[[Press Room]] and [[Press]]:orphaned redirects toward [[Press room]], could be deleted - keep, for people who can't remember the exact name and type the url
;[[Press clippings]]:a big paste by Elian, but almost orphaned page. IMO it could be changed to a page with links to the main ''press coverage'' pages on local projects
;[[Press release/La Foundation Wikimedia annonce le support de Yahoo]]:orphaned redirect toward [[Press releases/Wikimedia Foundation annonce le soutien de Yahoo!]], could be deleted
;[[プレスリリース]], [[Press releases-ja]] and [[Press room-ja]]:redirects toward [[プレスルーム]] (press). The first one is linked by three pages, while the other ones are orphaned redirects. to be fixed
;[[Press report]]:yet another press related page, last edit on july 2006 but quite inactive. What should we do with this?
;[[Project archives]]:gather pages written for the ''From the project'' section on the Home. Should be categorized and so on

== R ==

;[[Research report]]:ok, this should be nested in a smart ''Report'' category with the other Reports pages
;All the [[Resolutions]] pages:should be categorized and look pretty

== S ==

;[[Statistics]]:There may be useful information on Meta, must check and enhance this page. See also [[Wikimedia statistics]]

== T ==

;[[Thank you!]]:only available on Daniel Mayer workspace, but looks interesting :) So? it could be that this page is linked somewhere on the paypal donation process in the end, be careful
;[[Timezones]]:is a duplicate of [[:m:Timezone conversion]]: which one is being used? I don't know if it's a useful page here, but...
;[[Translation of the week]]:(broken) redirect toward [[:m:Translation of the week]], links should be fixed and this page could be deleted then
;[[Template:Latest meetings]]:last update on October 2005: is it still useful to have links toward this page on some of the (unmaintained) home pages?
== W ==

;[[Wikimania]]:oh, a not so used page that could have been really informative :/ should be cleaned up and promoted
;[[Wikimedia Foundation]]:linked by two pages only, fix those links and delete IMO
;[[Wikimedia Board meetings/4 July 2004]]:orphaned redirect, could be deleted
;[[Wikimedia Board meetings/5 September 2004]]:linked by [[User:Anthere/test]], from 2004: delete, move?
Ok, it's time to take a break and to sit down at the Babel!

I've edited many pages to fix small things (see below), but above all, I built '''[[User:Jd/Inventory|an inventory]]''' of the web site. I think we ''ought'' to clean up this wiki or it will be as messy as Meta soon :) There are.. many pages to be deleted, many pages to be categorized, many pages to be enhanced. See my inventory for the details, and also my [[User:Jd/Proposal|proposals]] about some specific points. I asked Angela, Anthere and Michael about the possibility to be admin here, so at least someone (who has time and will) can take care of the website. Basically, I volunteer for the maintenance of the wiki (check wether translations are up to date and monitor Meta related stuff, check that templates are used in the good way, delete orphaned, enhance pages, contact new translators and so on) o/ Just ask :)

Concerning the small things:
* working on categorization (lang cats, then usual cats by themes)
* enhanced accessibility by [[User:Jd/Proposal/LangCSS|improving the lang templates]] (can do more, but must be able to edit monobook.css easily)
* updated/synched with english many French pages
* and more to come btw :)
: I think it better than it was. But, I have a question. Why can't we link languages just like [[wikia:]]? at there, you can link other languages just same as a interwiki link and it is the most natural way to whom uses wikipedia/wikimedia projects. I want to remove those ugly language links from top of the every pages except home.--[[User:Suisui|Suisui]] 12:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC) I mean, we need <nowiki>[[wikipedia:en:something]]</nowiki> but we dont need <nowiki>[[en:something]]</nowiki> link to wikipedia:en: from here--[[User:Suisui|Suisui]] 12:35, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
::I started something like the Wikia system, for example [[:Category:English]] and [[:Category:Français]]. The main category (say, English) gathers all English written pages, and the sub-categories organize those pages within thematic blocks.
::One thing we must take into consideration is that many pages are available on English only (or have a poor translation so the English version is useful, or the English version is the official one (policies)). Thus, lang templates are often useful (even if, as you remind me on irc, japanese speakers often speak 日本語 only and are not interested with the English original text :). Translations issues affect old pages but also pages to come, since Meta translation process is freezed for many languages. So throwing away (all or any, don't know yet) lang templates may be an overreaction, IMO. [[User:Jd|jd]] [[User_talk:Jd|❂]] 13:38, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
You've talked about the design some <s>weeks</s> months ago. What do you think of the website looking (a bit more) like a "static" website? I mean, we might get rid of the traditionnal monobook stylesheet and have the wiki wearing a nicer, fancier, smarter skin which would fit both the wiki spirit and more traditionnal needs. I don't think the toolbox and all the edit, <s>history</s>needed, as talk pages, blabla stuff is needed by readers, since this wiki is in fact a "legal front", with few updates. If I'm right, we can have MediaWiki to hide those wiki elements to the anonymous users (and have them coming out again for registered contributors who need them to edit pages). If you think a good idea ''all this'' is, I can draft out a stylesheet :) [[User:Jd|Jd]] 00:59, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
:Please do, absolutely. And it might be a good idea to limit the pages which should exist in translations to a minimum which can be updated. It shows the foundation in a bad light if more than half of the content of this wiki here is outdated. --[[User:Elian|Elian]] 22:39, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Elianhttps://foundation.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Our_projects&diff=13796Our projects2006-05-22T12:08:19Z
Elian: /* Wikisource */

Wikipedia is a project to build free encyclopedias in all languages of the world. Virtually anyone is free to contribute.

The project started in January 2001 in one language, English, and currently has over 3,300,000 articles in over 125 languages. The largest Wikipedia is in the English language, with over 1,000,000 articles; then come the German, French, Polish and Japanese editions, with over 175,000 articles each. 80 other languages have at least 1,000 articles. New language editions are proposed and launched every month.

Since the start of the project, over 100,000 registered users have made at least ten edits. It is unknown how many users have registered on multiple projects at once. The total number of accounts created on the English Wikipedia alone exceeds 1,000,000.

Some Wikipedias release or plan to release regular snapshots. The German Wikipedia is released twice a year as a DVD, in collaboration with Directmedia Publishing. The French and English Wikipedias have a similar plan in collaboration with [[w:Mandriva|Mandriva]] (formerly ''Mandrake Soft'').

Wikipedia is also known for its community. In 2004 Wikipedia won the Webby Award for "Community" and the Prix Ars Electronica's Golden Nica for "Digital Communities".

As of February 2006, Wikinews is active in seventeen languages, and has produced more than 6000 news articles. Contributors from around the world write news articles collaboratively. Reports are ranged from original reports to summaries of news from external sources. All of them are required to be written from a neutral point of view. Currently Wikinews has two aims: providing a free content alternative to commercial news sites and making sure that articles are fact-checked and reviewed thoroughly.
'''End of fall fundraising'''

The Wikimedia fundraising drive ended late Thursday, with the final tally of $243,930 USD, more than 20% over the initial goal. A decline in donations was noticed over the last third week, with relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina in the spotlight, however, donations still came pouring in from all over the world. A minor edit war resulted at some point when the administrators of the english wikipedia [[w:en:MediaWiki_talk:Sitenotice|argued over]] whether linking to the Red Cross or other charities from the fundraising sitenotice was prudent, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The argument ended when Jimbo Wales removed the links, and ordered other users not to add it back.

The 3 weeks long fundraising drive started on August 19, aiming to pay in particular for the significant [[m:server]] costs, which have risen dramatically recently. Next fundraising should probably be expected at the end of 2005. ([[User:Anthere|Florence Devouard]])
'''New license for Wikinews'''

The Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License [CC-BY 2.5] was the favored
license in the recent poll at [[meta:Wikinews/Licensure Poll]].
31 people supported the license, which was an 82% supporting vote;
including over 87% of the Wikinewsies who voted. Many other options had few voters. Of the options with more than 12 voters, the GFDL was supported by 21% of voters, and Wikinews License 0.2 by 60% of its 17 voters (64% of Wikinewsies).

CC-BY 2.5 has now been agreed upon by the Wikimedia Foundation to
be the new license for all existing and future versions of Wikinews.
will need to be under this Creative Commons License.
The third quarter 2005 fund drive was held from Friday 19 August to Friday 9 September 2005 (2005.08.19 – 2005.09.09). '''New Wikimedia Foundation appointment'''

Danny Wool has accepted the offer of a job
at the Wikimedia Foundation to be the Executive Assistant for the
foundation. This job will primarily entail removing work from me so
that I ([[Board of Trustees#Jimmy (Jimbo) Wales|Jimbo Wales]]) can better focus on the parts of my job that I am best at.

Danny has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector and has been our
(volunteer) grant co-ordinator for some time. I have worked with Danny
on many projects and we are an excellent working team with a fine
personal relationship.

It is envisioned that Danny's staff role as my assistant will be
temporary as he comes in and sets up professional systems for our work
and begins to look for a replacement Executive Assistant (sometime
within a year, depending on the flow of events) so that he can focus
more and more over time in writing grant proposals.
'''Database crash'''

The disc subsystem on ''Adler'', one of the two main database servers, crashed a week ago, decreasing our database power. It has been fixed and re-synced, restoring most of the power. We currently have issues with the other main database server, ''Samuel'', but hope to resolve them soon. Three new database servers have been ordered and should be deployed within two or three weeks. (Domas) 08:33, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
'''New servers - 15 September 2005'''

In the past few days, we have set up a few Squid servers on the newly installed Yahoo! cluster in Seoul, South Korea. They have started
serving requests from several Asian countries last night, as can be seen on [http://noc.wikimedia.org/stats.php our stats] (yellow = yahoo, blue = florida, green = amsterdam, purple = paris)

Work is underway to experiment with using the remaining boxes in the Yahoo cluster as apache/mediawiki application servers, to offload the
Florida cluster and make things more redundant. As this will create many complex problems and management overhead, we are not sure if and when
that situation will be used in production.(Mark Bergsma) 08:33, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

The next main expenses are planned for hosting costs (8%), and a financial reserve (10%). The Chief Technical Officer will now be employed full time, and the board is looking for a Hardware assistant as well as an Executive assistant. ([[user:Anthere|Anthere]])

GIVE THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE: WIKIMEDIA FOUNDATION LAUNCHES YEAR-END FUNDRAISER TO SUPPORT PROJECTS

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA., UNITED STATES-December 16, 2005 - The Wikimedia Foundation (http://wikimediafoundation.org) today announced a three-week
fundraising campaign to help support the future operation and expansion of its free, multilingual wiki-based projects. The fundraiser runs from
December 16, 2005 through January 6, 2006, and Wikimedia will accept donations in dozens of currencies from individuals and organizations
around the globe.

The nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and
to providing the full content of its wiki-based projects to the public free of charge. The Wikimedia Foundation operates some of the largest
collaboratively edited reference projects in the world, including Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org), one of the Internet's 50 most visited Web
sites.

"Every donation we receive from an individual or an organization helps us bring free educational content to millions of people, including those
who cannot afford print encyclopedias and dictionaries," said Jimmy Wales, co-founder of the Wikimedia Foundation. "Every dollar, piece of
equipment or contributor's time donated has an immeasurable impact on our ability to keep projects going and expand them to help more people."

The Wikimedia Foundation relies primarily on support from individual contributors. Thousands of individuals and organizations around the
world have made donations of time, money or hardware, to help support Wikimedia's mission of providing free educational content and
information. Thanks in large part to these donations, Wikipedia expanded to approximately 2.5 million total articles covering more than 120 languages. In addition, Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository, now contains more than 300,000 free image, audio and video files (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page).

The Wikimedia Foundation has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the United States. Donations made from other nations may also be tax deductible. See deductibility of donations for details. Please see our fundraising page at http://www.wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Fundraising for details of making donations via PayPal, MoneyBookers or by postal mail. For all other types of donation, please contact the Wikimedia Board at board at wikimedia.org.
Elianhttps://foundation.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Press_room&diff=11842Press room2005-12-16T11:53:24Z
Elian: +fundraiser

''6 December 2005, Tampa, Florida''. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced today the establishment of stricter editorial practices in the English edition of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia. On December 5, Wales experimentally removed the ability of unregistered users to create new articles in Wikipedia. Unregistered users will still be able to fix spelling mistakes and add to existing articles but are required to register a user account before creating new pages. Wales said: "This will reduce the work load on the volunteer editors controlling contributions to the project."

Wikipedia has been a subject of media coverage recently over a complaint in USA Today by retired journalist John Seigenthaler, who discovered insinuations in his Wikipedia biography that he had been involved in the assassinations of both John and Robert Kennedy. Seigenthaler contacted Jimmy Wales about the situation two months ago and this version of the article was immediately removed from the site. The article has since been rewritten. Like many of the problematic contributions to Wikipedia, the offending version of the Seigenthaler article was written by an unregistered user. Wikipedia volunteers patrol a large volume of contributions in an effort to catch such problems.

"Our main goal is to produce a free high quality encyclopedia. The open editing process is a means to this end which allowed us to build Wikipedia and make it available to everyone free of charge. It is not a goal in itself," said Wales. Wikipedia is a volunteer project in which quality control and fact checking are handled by a community of more than 1000 regular authors. Feedback about the change has been positive: "As a new page patroller, the new system does seem to be working. It's pleasant to be spending more time fixing useful articles, and less time getting rid of newbie tests" said one regular on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia has become increasingly popular as a reference work while it still remains a work in progress. However, the Wikipedia community takes its responsibility toward its readers very seriously. In response to this incident, community members have debated a number of options to prevent such cases in the future. Possibilities under consideration include features to rate articles and identify stable versions that are suitable as finished work.

==About Wikipedia==
Started in January 2001, Wikipedia is currently the world's fastest-growing, most current, and largest encyclopedia, with 2.5 million articles under active development in over 120 languages. It is created entirely by volunteers who contribute, update, and revise articles in a collaborative process. The English-language edition contains 10 million internal links, and incorporates 25,000 edits and 1,500 new articles each day.

Wikipedia's content is written for a general audience, and is continually being revised for clarity, readability, and accuracy. Original text, images and sounds contributed to Wikipedia are licensed under the [http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html#SEC1 GNU Free Documentation Licence] (GFDL), which lets users copy and modify each other's work based on a principle known as "copyleft." The entire database is [http://download.wikimedia.org/ freely downloadable].
Wikimania, Wikimedia's first international conference in August 2005 was a milestone in the history of Wikimedia. Organized entirely by volunteers from within the community, the event was greeted enthusiastically by the media and the 400 participants from 50 countries around the world. Such a conference was only possible thanks to the help of corporate sponsors: [http://www.answers.com Answers.com], [http://www.socialtext.com Socialtext], [http://www.sun.com/ Sun Microsystems], [http://www.doccheck.de/ DocCheck], [http://www.logos.it Logos] and others. So we are especially happy to receive their gratulations:

Bob Rosenschein, CEO of Answers.com:
:''congratulations for a remarkable event. We're proud to be associated with you, and keep up the great work on a landmark system which, history will record, changed the face of modern content.''
and Ross Mayfield, CEO of Socialtext comments on Wikimania:
:''When good people come together great things happen. Behind all the content there is a vibrant community. It was wonderful to participate in the event, share what's happening with enterprise wikis and see new initiatives take root. I also commend you one of the best volunteer-powered conferences ever. Wikimania was the best investment our company has made, bar none, for a greater common future.''
==May 2005==
'''26 May, 2005:''' The popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, the best-known project of the Wikimedia Foundation, will receive technical support from Kennisnet, thus helping the Foundation to achieve its goal of improving the capacity and responsiveness of Wikipedia. The agreement was reached to promote the shared values and educational objectives of Kennisnet and the Wikimedia Foundation.

To mark this cooperation, Kennisnet will be present with the Wikimedia Foundation at the Holland Open conference in Amsterdam on May 31st, 2005 (www.hollandopen.nl). In his keynote address, Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia and president of the Wikimedia Foundation, will expand on this new partnership.

Kennisnet has found in the Wikimedia Foundation a reliable partner with regard to open content and freely licensed knowledge. The cooperation extends across several projects, including the “Ultimate Wiktionary”, a project for the integration of lexicological content, and a project celebrating the jubilee of Queen Beatrix (www.25jaarbeatrix.kennisnet.nl).
==April 2005==

'''April 7, 2005:''' The [http://wikimediafoundation.org/ Wikimedia Foundation] and [http://yahoo.com Yahoo!] announced today that they have reached an agreement by which Yahoo will provide hosting capacity to Wikimedia. Yahoo will dedicate a significant number of servers in one of its Asian facilities for hosting Wikimedia's free content websites. Jimmy Wales, CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, says that this generous donation will be of particular benefit to the vibrant and growing community of Wikipedia users in that part of the world.

Yahoo!'s donation is a gesture of support for the charitable goals of the Wikimedia Foundation, and does not imply any ownership of the content. Yahoo! does not expect Wikimedia to host advertisements in return for this support.

As of April 7, Yahoo! will also test the integration of Wikipedia content in its French-language Yahoo! Search [http://fr.search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=sfp&p=guatemala&meta=vl%3D shortcuts], to be followed by other languages to accommodate users in Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the U.S. The shortcuts will show contextually relevant abstracts of [http://www.wikipedia.org Wikipedia] articles in response to user queries.

Yahoo! is one of the Wikimedia Foundation's earliest corporate supporters. The relationship began last year with Yahoo!'s integration of Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, into their [http://docs.yahoo.com/docs/pr/release1144.html Content Acquisition Program].
In January 2005, we were granted $40,000 by the [http://rlounsbery.org/default.asp Lounsbery Foundation]. Our grant application specified we would spend this in the following way:

*to cover our daily operations,
*to enable us to launch our new Wikispecies project, and
*to continue to improve our existing projects.
* [http://lost-oasis.fr/ Lost-Oasis], a French Internet service provider, has offered to host 3 servers in a colocation facility in Paris, and to pay for the Internet connection.
*The '''[http://www.ahbeck.com/ Beck Foundation]''' offered us a 10,000 USD grant to support a Wikijunior project (short encyclopedia-style children's books on specific subjects). The current plan is to create content for 48-page print books on Geography, Animals, and Astronomy. See [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikijunior Wikijunior] for more details.
The third quarter 2005 fund drive is being held from Friday 19 August to Friday 9 September 2005 ('''2005.08.19 – 2005.09.09'''). The primary goal is to raise US$200,000 ([http://finance.yahoo.com/currency?u Yahoo! Currency Converter]) to meet income requirements in the [[Budget/2005|third quarter 2005 budget]]. If there is a substantial amount of money collected above income requirements, then the board will decide what to do with those funds.

The '''Wikimedia Foundation Inc.''' is the parent organization of various free-content projects, most notably [http://www.wikipedia.org Wikipedia], the award-winning online encyclopedia. Other online projects include [http://www.wikinews.org/wiki/Main_Page Wikinews], a free news source, [http://www.wiktionary.org/wiki/Main_Page Wiktionary], a multilingual dictionary; [http://wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikibooks_portal Wikibooks], a collection of free-content textbooks; [http://wikiquote.org/wiki/Main_Page Wikiquote], a repository of famous quotes; and [http://sources.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Wikisource], a repository for primary-source materials.

Wikimedia is a [[w:en:non-profit|non-profit]] corporation organized under the laws of [[w:en:Florida|Florida]], [[w:en:United States|USA]]. Its existence was officially announced by Wikipedia founder [[Board of Trustees#Jimmy (Jimbo) Wales|Jimmy Wales]] on June 20, 2003. In January 2004, Jimmy Wales appointed Tim Shell and Michael Davis to the [[Board of Trustees|Board of Trustees]] of the Wikimedia Foundation. In June 2004, an election was held for two user representative Board members. Following one month of campaigning and two weeks of online voting, Angela Beesley and Florence Nibart-Devouard were elected to join the board.

==The goals of the foundation==
The goals of the foundation are to maintain and develop [[w:en:free content|free-content]], [[w:en:wiki|wiki]]-based projects and to provide the full contents of those projects to the public [[w:en:gratis|free of charge]]. In addition to managing the already developed multilingual general encyclopedia ''Wikipedia'', there is a multi-language [[w:en:dictionary|dictionary]] and thesaurus named Wiktionary, an encyclopedia of [[w:en:quotations|quotations]] named Wikiquote and a collection of e-book resources aimed specifically toward students (such as [[w:en:textbook|textbooks]] and annotated [[w:en:public domain|public domain]] books) named Wikibooks. The Foundation also manages a memorial collection of articles about the [[w:en:September 11, 2001 attacks|September 11 attacks]] and the operations of the largely dormant Nupedia project (which is not a wiki, but is open content). All projects work thanks to a wiki software package called [[w:en:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]].

The Wikimedia Foundation owns the Wikimedia servers along with the domain names and trademarks of all Wikimedia projects and MediaWiki. Contributors retain the copyright to their own content and the [[w:en:GNU FDL|GNU FDL]] license used on these projects prevents anyone from controlling the content.

The continued growth of each Wikimedia project is dependent on [[fundraising|donations]]. The Wikimedia Foundation aims to increase revenue by finding alternative means of support, including grants and sponsorship.

The name ''Wikimedia'' is a portmanteau of ''wiki'' and ''multimedia''.

== Organization ==

===Bylaws===
The [[bylaws]] of Wikimedia Foundation Inc. may be viewed online.

===The Board of Trustees===
A Wikimedia [[Board of Trustees]] manage the nonprofit and supervise the disposition and solicitation of nonprofit donations. The Board of Trustees are the ultimate corporate authority in the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (article IV, sec. 1 of the [[Wikimedia Foundation bylaws]]). The Board has the power to direct the activities of the foundation. It also has the authority to set membership dues, discipline and suspend members (article III), and to amend the corporate bylaws (article VI).

===Income===
As of January 2005, Wikimedia is funded in most part through private donations, but through several grants and gifts of servers and hosting (see [[benefactors]]).

There are regularly discussions of finding alternate sources of income, such as applying for grants or selling WikiReaders. For the time being, we want the Wikimedia projects to remain free of advertisements. There has also been discussion of selling a print version of a significant portion of Wikipedia, such as a Wikipedia 1.0 project. Finally, a membership system is planned for 2005.

For more information about donations, see our [[fundraising|fundraising page]].

===Liabilities===

For details on what we have done with donations since the start of 2004, and how we plan to use our funds, see ''[[m:What we use the money for|What we use the money for]]''.

One of the main expenses for the Foundation is '''hardware'''.
* Description of the hardware that powers Wikimedia : [[meta:Wikimedia servers|Wikimedia servers]], [[meta:Wikimedia_servers/hardware_orders|hardware orders]]
* Frequently updated status of this hardware : [[meta:Wikimedia hardware status|Wikimedia hardware status]]

Six servers are now being hosted in France as squids, with another eleven in the Netherlands. The hosting and bandwidth have been donated.

The Foundation currently spends almost no money on salaries or any other type of employee, consultant, or volunteer compensation (except for Chad Perrin, was is being employed as a hardware assistant in January 2005. Chad is worked for at least one day per week, until March 2005). In the future, the Foundation may reimburse costs, such as travel costs, shipping costs, and phone bills.

'''Domain registration''' is another part of Wikimedia's liabilities. The Foundation already owns some of its active and secondary/tangentially-related [[w:en:domain names]], while others are still free or already owned. see also [[m:Domain names]].

See also [[meta:Wikimedia budget]] for a detailed list of other potential expenses. See [[budget]] for official budgets.

=== Local chapters ===
There are presently three active Wikimedia chapters.
* [http://www.wikimedia.de Wikimedia Deutschland], founded on June 13, 2004
* [http://www.wikimedia.fr Wikimédia France], founded on October 23th, 2004
* [http://www.wikimedia.it Wikimedia Italia], founded on June 17th, 2005

Other [[Local chapters|local chapters]] are also being planned.
:"congratulations for a remarkable event. We're proud to be associated with you, and keep up the great work on a landmark system which, history will record, changed the face of modern content." ''-- Bob Rosenschein, CEO Answers.com''
==May 2005==
'''26 May, 2005:''' The popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, the best-known project of the Wikimedia Foundation, will receive technical support from Kennisnet, thus helping the Foundation to achieve its goal of improving the capacity and responsiveness of Wikipedia.

==April 2005==

==Pre-February 2005==

Thanks to [http://www.bomis.com/ Bomis], who have until October 2004 paid the total cost of Wikimedia's hosting and bandwidth fees, and from October 2004 to February 2005 continued to sponsor half of these fees.

==January 2005==

Thanks to Lost Oasis who is now hosting 3 of our servers for free in Paris. '''http://lost-oasis.fr.'''

==October 2004==

* Thanks to [http://www.sunhelp.org Bill Bradford] and [http://www.thinklogical.com/ Logical Solutions] for the donation of a much needed [http://www.thinklogical.com/products/sentinel32.html Sentinel32] 32-port secure console server and RJ45 to DB9 adapters.
Thanks to the Beck Foundation.

==September 2004==
Our largest project by far is [http://www.wikipedia.org Wikipedia], the free encyclopedia. Started in January 2001, it celebrated one million articles in over 100 languages in September 2004. By August 2005, Wikipedia has become one of the 50 most popular websites in the world (source: [http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?&range=2y&size=large&compare_sites=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wikipedia.org%2F#graph Alexa Internet analysis of Wikipedia traffic]).
Wikimedia

Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human know-ledge. That‘s what we‘re doing. -- Jimmy Wales

Wikimedia is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to the development and distribution of free multilingual content. It hosts various free-content projects, most notably Wikipedia, the award-winning online encyclopædia. Other online projects include Wiktionary, a multilingual dictionary; Wikibooks, a collection of free-content textbooks; Wikiquote, a repository of famous quotes; and Wikisource, a repository for primary-source materials.

The Wikimedia Foundation was set up in June 2003 to serve and develop the necessary infrastructure for the constantly growing projects. It owns the Wikimedia servers and covers bandwidth and hosting costs. In Germany, France and Italy, local Wikimedia chapters have been founded to support and promote the projects on a national level. Wikimedia is run mostly by volunteer staff and relies entirely on public donations and grants to meet its goal of providing free knowledge to every person in the world.

Free content
All contents of the Wikimedia projects are available under a free licence. Everyone is allowed to copy, distribute, sell, and modify the content, on the condition that they credit the author and preserve the licence which gives everyone else the same rights. This principle, coming from the free software world, is called “copyleft”. The GNU Free Documentation License ensures that the contents remain free.

Wikis
Invented by Ward Cunningham in 1995, wikis are dynamic websites in which any user can edit a page, quickly and easily, using a web browser. The name is derived from the Hawaiian word “Wikiwiki”, meaning fast. Wikis use a simple formatting language anyone can learn in just a few minutes. For example, to italicise text, surround it with two apostrophes; use three for bolded text, and enclose a word in two brackets ([[]]) to create a link to another page in the wiki.

The software used by the Wikimedia projects is called MediaWiki, and was developed with the goal of creating an encyclopædia. The MediaWiki software itself is published under a free licence, the GNU General Public License (GPL). In addition to the Wikimedia projects, MediaWiki has been deployed as a collaborative knowledge management tool by international organisations, universities, and companies.

Wikipedia
Wikipedia is founded on the belief that virtually everybody has some knowledge that they can share with others. It began as an English-language project on January 15, 2001. It was soon joined by a German and French edition, and in a short time by many other languages. The online encyclopædia is written entirely by volunteers: anyone can create or modify an article instantly, so that no article has a single author. Instead, hundreds and even thousands of people work together, sharing what they know to edit and improve the content. The result is a never-ending “work in progress”, always getting more thorough, and always getting better.

Wikipedia’s editors come from a wide range of backgrounds, students, teachers, enthusiasts in many subjects, each of them contributing a little towards helping make this the most well-rounded collaborative educational effort ever seen. Wikipedia believes that every single person has the right to learn, but also that every person has something that they can teach others.

Contributors can create a personal account with a user name and a password, but this is not required. Some of Wikipedia’s best work comes from anonymous users, many of them just passing through, who notice a minor flaw that they can tidy up. Many of them become hooked, and end up as integral parts of the volunteer community. Wikipedia’s policy of maintaining a neutral point of view encourages people from diverse backgrounds to work together.

All original material contributed to Wikipedia is considered to be free content under the GNU Free Documentation License. This means that all of its content can be freely used, freely edited, freely copied, and freely redistributed, subject to the restrictions of that licence.

Wikipedia, one of the 50 most popular websites in the world (according to alexa.com), is now available in over 120 languages; in descending order, the largest are English, German, French, Japanese, Swedish, Dutch, and Polish. In total, there are more than 2.2 million articles, with 660 000 in the English edition, and 260 000 in German.
Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons was launched in September 2004, to provide a central repository for free video, images, music, and spoken texts, to be used by all Wikimedia projects. The project allows its resources, images and sound files to be reused across other Wikimedia projects. As of June 2005, it has over 150 000 multimedia files. Wikimedia Commons received an honorary mention for Digital Community at the 2005 Prix Ars Electronica awards in May 2005.
Who is who in Wikimedia?

Jimmy “Jimbo” Wales
Jimmy “Jimbo“ Donal Wales (born August 7, 1966), is the founder of Wikipedia and the President of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, and is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He worked as Research Director at Chicago Options Associates, a futures and options trading firm then located in Chicago.

In 1999, Wales had the concept of a freely distributable encyclopædia, and founded a project called Nupedia. It failed primarily due to being a top-down “cathedral” model, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is the ultimate “bazaar”. After more than 2 years of struggle with the Nupedia concept, Wikipedia was opened up to all and became an instant success.

Wales is currently the President and Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation. He lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, with his wife and daughter.

Florence Devouard
Florence Nibart-Devouard is the Vice-Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation, re-elected by the Wikimedia community in July 2005. Florence was born in Versailles, Paris, and lived in several French cities, as well as Antwerp in Belgium and Tempe in Arizona. She is an engineer in Agronomy (ENSAIA) and also holds a DEA in Genetics and biotechnologies (INPL). She joined the Wikipedia adventure in February 2002 and is known under the pseudonym “Anthere”. Florence is 36, and lives in Clermont Ferrand with her husband Bertrand and her two children.

Angela Beesley
Angela Beesley is the Executive Secretary of the Wikimedia Foundation, re-elected by the community in July 2005. Angela was born in Norwich, England, in 1977 and grew up in Maidstone and Colchester. She holds an honours degree in psychology. During a year out from Aston University, and for a period after graduating, Angela worked as a research assistant in the Aston Dyslexia and Developmental Assessment Centre. She then worked for the National Foundation for Educational Research, based in Berkshire, as a developer of the national statutory assessments for England and Wales. Angela currently lives in Berlin, and manages Wikicities, which she founded with Jimmy Wales in October 2004.

Brion Vibber
Brion Vibber is the lead developer and release manager of Mediawiki, the wiki software used on all the Wikimedia projects. He is 26 years old and lives in California, USA. He has been involved as a developer for about 3 years, and has probably poked his finger into every development task, including maintenance of servers, performance improvement, development of features, debugging, and user interface.

...and more than 50 000 other authors from all over the world
“Thousands of volunteers [have] written a breathtaking 500,000 articles in 50 languages since 2001—all thanks to the defining feature of wikis.“ (Businessweek, June 2004)
It puts the wiki concept to practical use, drawing on the combined knowledge and experience of all its contributors to create something informative and authoritative.“ (The Guardian, April 1, 2004)
“What is perhaps most fascinating about Wikipedia is its demonstration in practical anarchy. It is an ever-shifting, voluntary, collaborative enterprise. If it is in the long run successful, it would show that people can make amazing things together without being commanded, constrained, taxed, bribed or punished...if Wikipedia grows into the greatest reference work ever made, it will suggest that great things are possible when you merely let people go and see what happens.“ (Crispin Sartwell, Los Angeles Times. All major projects of the [[About Wikimedia|Wikimedia Foundation]] are collaboratively developed by its users using the [[#MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] software. The content is free under the [[:en:GNU Free Documentation License|GNU Free Documentation License]], meaning that it may be freely used, freely edited, freely copied and freely redistributed subject to the restrictions of that license. == Wikipedia ==

[[Image:Wikipedia.png|right]]
Wikipedia is a project to build free encyclopedias in all languages of the world. Everyone is invided to join this collaborative editing process. Even user registration isn't required, though the Wikipedia community encourages editors to register themselves.

The project started in January 2001 and has reached 1.000.000 articles in over 140 languages on 20 September, 2004. While the largest Wikipedia is in English language with over 500,000 articles, there are well over 700,000 articles in 190 other languages, some quite large, and others just starting, with one or two articles. Wikipedia is so an active project that some new language editions are proposed and launched in every month. Following English Wikipedia, German, Japanese and French editions have over 100,000 articles each.

Since the start of the project, over 35,000 registered users had made at least five edits, though it is unknown how many of users registered on several projects at once. The total number of created accounts on the whole Wikipedia exceeds 100,000.

Some Wikipedia have a plan of snapshop release. German Wikipedia was released as CD and DVD in collaboration with Directmedia Publishing. French Wikipedia has a similar plan in collaboration with Mandriva (former ''Mandrake Soft'').

Wikipedia is also known with its community. In 2004 Wikipedia won the Webby Award for "Communuty" and the Prix Ars Electronica for "Digital Communities".
