Wikipedia is cool! I'll give you some money. But what will it be used for?

The money will be used for the continued operation and improvement of Wikimedia projects. This includes hardware, bandwidth, staff, events like Wikimania, and other expenses. A successful fundraiser will mean both being able to continue and expand what we are currently doing, and to have a secure financial base for the future.
For more information, please read "What we need the money for".
You can also see how we've been using money in the past here (PDF, 90KB).

Why does Wikipedia need my help?

The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia and its sister projects, is a not-for-profit organization. It is sustained by its editors and readers: by people like you.

Does the Wikimedia Foundation still need help?

Our official fundraiser ended (on Wikipedia Day). Thank you to all who contributed! The fundraiser was an unprecedented success. As a rapidly-growing top-15 website, we continue to face many challenges and many opportunities. Your contributions will still make a difference.

What forms of donations do you accept?

We accept donations by PayPal, Moneybookers, cheque, or bank transfer, in any of the currencies these systems accept. Please see our fundraising page for more information. To ask about making other types of gifts, contact donations@wikimedia.org.

Can I donate from anywhere in the world?

The Wikimedia Foundation accepts donations without discrimination. However, the companies handling our credit card transactions have their own policies regarding what kind of cards and countries they accept to deal with. If PayPal does not accept transactions from your country, try MoneyBookers, or the converse. PayPal appears to service these countries; Moneybookers appears to accept funds from every country. In any case, we still welcome checks and direct transfers.

Where can I view detailed information about the progress of fundraising?

We maintain a complete listing of contributions for both the current and previous fundraisers. You can view breakdowns based on currency and date in addition to viewing donor names and comments.

Can I make a donation in someone else's name, and have a notification sent automatically?

Right now the best way to do something like this is to include a comment in the Paypal or Moneybookers box on the donations page.

I have a question that isn't answered here. What should I do?

If there is a technical problem with your donation, or if there is a question not answered on the Fundraising pages, you may send your questions to donations@wikimedia.org.
