The communications officer supports the Head of Communications in all of the Foundations key communications activities, including media relations/ analysis, management and design of communications products, marketing and promotion, and project management.

The communications officer will work closely with all staff in the Foundation, providing a broad range of communications support. The communications officer will also be immersed in a diverse, international volunteer community, providing direction for volunteer-led public outreach and fundraising activities.

* Track and analyze international Wikimedia media exposure, including development of a web/print clips archive
* Develop communications support products, including speaking points, issues briefs, press releases, social media posts, Q&As, and reports/summaries
* Assist in the development of systems to manage incoming data, including user stories, supporting quotes, and best practices
* Maintain the Wikimedia Foundation stakeholders database
* Update and maintain several information wikis
* Support external marketing efforts, specifically relating to ongoing international fundraising efforts
* Research prospective media or speaking opportunities
* Support the Foundation or volunteers at public events
* Act as back-up media relations contact as required
* Lead product creation activities alongside outsider contractors and volunteers
* Coordinate speaking events for Wikimedia staff and volunteers

* Three to five years experience in a communications, marketing, or public relations role, preferably within the non-profit, on-line, media, or technology sector
* Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are a must
* Experience working with or as part of large volunteer communities is a major plus
* Understanding of the free culture and open source movement
* Comfort with a wide variety of communications tools is a must: for example, mailing lists, IRC, instant messaging
* Comfortable responding to or reaching out to international media
* Awareness and interest in supporting the Foundation's mission to support the expansion of free knowledge globally
* High degree of comfort with communications technologies, including office software, web applications, design/illustration software, databases
* Experience in HTML, wiki markup, or CSS is a major asset
* Experience living or working internationally is a major plus, as is the ability to speak languages in addition to English
* Must be able to work well with people with a very wide diversity of demographic and cultural characteristics
* Must flourish in an environment that is highly transparent and collaborative
* Experience working with AP style guides, other style guide familiarity would be an asset
