JOB TITLE

The Wikimedia Foundation seeks a Director of Community Operations to coordinate, organize and provide operational support to the Community Department’s outreach, fellowship, community and fundraising teams.


JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Community Officer (CCO), the Director of Community Operations will provide process, logistics and operational support in order to increase the bandwidth and velocity of the Community Department staff.

The Director of Community Operations is responsible for the central coordination of activities; they will ensure that the department runs efficiently and smoothly, will assist with the projects, initiatives and activities impacting the Community and will be an individual who thrives on details, planning, and solving problems. They should be a mature and level-headed support to a team of highly creative individuals.


ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely in concert with the Chief Community Officer and drive the operational agenda of the Community Department; take initiative to relieve the CCO of detail work and create a central coordination of activities;
  • Providing high level of support to the team;
  • Help team set goals; assess progress along the way with check-in points to ensure they are on task; operate a reporting system and dashboard;
  • Develop processes and procedures for new initiatives; oversee a central data repository for capturing, cataloging, analyzing and disseminating key lessons and resources;
  • As liaison to CCO, intercede when necessary to ensure that his/her time is spent on Foundation concerns, broad department matters and strategic initiatives; takes initial meetings with outside parties for screening purposes or as a representative of the CCO’s office for greater accessibility;


IDEAL EXPERIENCE

The Director of Community Operations should ideally come from a service-oriented environment where interacting and guiding a wide range of demographically and culturally diverse individuals with varying degrees of professional experience were essential.

The successful candidate should have:

  • Skills to collaborate with and achieve actionable results through others; the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships; work collaboratively and strategically in a team environment;
  • The acumen to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously mixing long term projects with the urgency of immediate demands on the operations;
  • Worked in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure and where there’s ambiguity, while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient;
  • Strong comfort with the internet and technology, with a bias toward documentation and creating replicable processes;
  • Excellent communication skills; able to convey thoughts clearly and succinctly; able to think analytically and write clearly; organized, detail-oriented, and thorough.
  • Minimum of 15 years management and/or project management experience. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.


PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

The successful candidate should be:

  • Service-oriented, with the sensibility to alleviate operational details from the CCO and staff; a desire to create an environment where the CCO and staff feel confident that the nuts and bolts aspects of projects and initiatives are being handled well;
  • A facilitator who will be viewed by members of the team as an strong resource and ally; a high energy level “doer”;
  • Comfortable working in a highly transparent fashion;
  • Emotionally mature and self-reliant; unflappable, loyal, supportive; a high sense of personal responsibility and integrity;
  • Able to adapt to meet the needs of a particular situation: generally open-minded and oriented towards consensus;
  • Able to work well with people with a wide diversity of skills, demographic and cultural characteristics;
  • A sense of humor.
