Engineering Program Manager (EPM) - Data Analytics

Job Purpose

Organize the data analytics efforts of the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation has a small, centralized team for basic analysis and engineering around data analytics. Additionally, there are data analysts and data miners in other parts of the organization who need the support of the central data analytics team. The EPM of Data Analytics is responsible for managing the activities and priorities for the central team, and will be responsible for coordinating organization-wide efforts in data collection and analytics.

Job Summary

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Organize and prioritize the engineering activity of our data analysts and data analytics engineers
  • Assign people to project tasks in the most effective and humane manner possible
  • Report project activity clearly, effectively, and in a way consistent with other parts of the organization
  • Catalog the myriad details of analytics requests and project development, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks
  • Drive decisions and advise on selection and improvement of analytics tools
  • Identify and address roadblocks to smooth team operation, enlisting the help of other parts of the organization as appropriate
  • Act as outward ambassador for the team, patrolling mailing lists and attend meetings on behalf of more focused team members
  • Design effective team communication channels that provide a large amount of focused productivity while still allowing the team to be acceptably responsive to each other and everyone else
  • Ensure effective intra- and extra-team communication
  • Keep team spirits high and drama low

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years project management experience
  • Experience inside a data analytics team, preferably as a data analyst or a project manager
  • Well-rounded knowledge of data capture, data distilling, and data presentation tools used by high-volume websites
  • Experience in many different project management methodologies (e.g. scrum, XP, spiral, waterfall, interpretive dance)
  • Experience with many different planning tools and informed opinion on the appropriateness of those tools (for example: MS Project, Basecamp, Bugzilla, spreadsheet, wikis, whiteboard and sticky notes).
  • Proper knowledge, respect, and appreciation of the laws and norms around data privacy
  • Experience with community software development
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with an open community in planning releases, publishing roadmaps and rallying development teams to meet publicly-stated milestones.
  • Experience implementing process change at other organizations, and demonstrate a capability for successful change management at WMF.
  • Must be able to adhere to deadlines, complete projects independently and manage costs and budgets.
  • Shared passion about free culture, free software, and open source is essential
  • You must be comfortable in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment.
  • The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural contexts.
  • Must have a strong affinity for the Wikimedia mission.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with use of wiki technology is a major plus.
  • Experience living or working outside of your home country is a major plus.
  • Experience working with online volunteers is a major plus.
  • Active participation as a Wikimedia volunteer would be an asset, though not a prerequisite.
