  • Commence new, and support ongoing WMF efforts to communicate the incredible work of the Wikimedia movement to our global community of users, contributors, donors and other stakeholders.
  • Develop an internal, movement communications strategy for WMF that leverages pre-existing platforms (wikis, blogs, mailing lists, etc.) and proposes new methods for bringing stories, mission-critical and general information to the 100,000+ strong Wikimedia community, and that creates opportunities for community collaboration and participation.
  • Develop a strategy, in partnership with the volunteer translation community, to ensure that key movement information is widely translated.
  • Work with the Global Communications Manager and Wikimedia movement volunteers to examine new methods of sharing major milestones, community initiatives and accomplishments with external audiences (public, donors, stakeholders, and staff).
  • Establish a Foundation-wide, information broadcast schedule to enable more predictable and consistent sharing of Foundation news, activities and accomplishments with the community.
  • Build strong relationships with Wikimedia project representatives (Wikipedia and its sister projects), chapter members, and informal organizations (including student groups) to improve the quality and quantity of story-telling directed at users, contributors, media, and important stakeholders.
  • Write about the Wikimedia movement on the Wikimedia blog, email newsletters, video and audio podcasts, social media spaces, and Wikimedia publications.
  • Serve as a moderator for IRC chats and other discussion forums with the community.
  • Actively monitor and participate in discussions on mailing lists.
  • Work with a range of WMF staff to conceptualize new communications technologies and outreach tools aimed at Wikimedia project users – both on-wiki and in related, frequented editor spaces.
  • Act as author, editor, and publisher in the creation and distribution of Wikimedia movement stories and mission-critical information to a global audience of project contributors and the general public.
  • Assist WMF management in the development of strategies to communicate mission-critical information to the Wikimedia community around the world.
  • Act as a resource to both WMF Staff and the global community of volunteers on the topic of effective movement communications and information sharing.
  • As required, support on-going WMF communications initiatives, including media relations, project management, writing, marketing, and event planning.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three or more years experience in the creation and execution of on-line, internal communications activities, OR a similar amount of experience collaborating in on-line wiki projects with large groups of volunteers with strategic outcomes.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, mass media, journalism. Other degree holders with considerable experience in the field of internal communications or on-line collaboration will be considered as well.
  • Deep knowledge of the global Wikimedia movement, its history, future, and the range of small to extraordinary activities underway in our projects.
  • Exceptional English writing is critical for this role, including the ability to write time-sensitive, efficient, compelling, and clearly understandable communications products for a wide range of audiences.

  • Must be able to rapidly synthesize stories and ideas from an overwhelming amount of volunteer-generated information.
