Job Purpose

Manage the product backlog for cross-functional metrics and analytics efforts of the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation has a small, centralized team for basic analysis and engineering around data analytics. Additionally, there are data analysts and data miners in other parts of the organization who need the support of the central data analytics team. The Product Manager of Data Analytics will be responsible for setting the priorities for the central team, and will be responsible for coordinating organization-wide efforts in data collection and analytics.

Job Summary

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prioritize and support development of open source analytics products to facilitate decision-making across the Wikimedia movement. Analytics products include executive dashboards, feature dashboards, click-tracking tools, and visualizations.
  • Work with Wikimedia Foundation and community members to gather requirements and develop analytics roadmap
  • Work with legal department and the Wikimedia community to ensure that Wikimedia Foundation research/analytics practices are respectful towards user privacy and user autonomy
  • Lead/collaborate with engineering/analyst teams by setting priorities, brain-storming approaches, managing deliverables and evaluating findings
  • Drive decisions and advise on selection and improvement of analytics tools
  • Act as outward ambassador for the team, patrolling mailing lists and attend meetings on behalf of engineering/research focused team members
  • Design effective team communication channels that provide a large amount of focused productivity while still allowing the team to be acceptably responsive to each other and everyone else
  • Be an open source advocate, and help mobilize and grow open source analytics efforts
  • Help keep team spirits high and drama low

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in software development (as an engineer or product manager) or data analytics
  • Experience with web analytics platform such as Google Analytics, Omniture, PiWik, OpenWebAnalytics, or other
  • Well-rounded knowledge of data capture, data distilling, and data presentation tools used by high-volume websites
  • Experience in agile and open source development methodologies is a major plus.
  • Proper knowledge, respect, and appreciation of the laws and norms around data privacy
  • Experience implementing process change at other organizations, and demonstrate a capability for successful change management at WMF.
  • You must be comfortable in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment.
  • The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural contexts.
  • Must have a strong affinity for the Wikimedia mission.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with use of wiki technology is a major plus.
  • Experience living or working outside of your home country is a major plus.
  • Experience working with online volunteers is a major plus.
  • Active participation as a Wikimedia volunteer would be an asset, though not a prerequisite.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with an open community in planning releases, publishing roadmaps and rallying development teams to meet publicly-stated milestones.
  • Experience with community software development
