However, users should not be alarmed. As Wikipedia’s last fundraiser proved, the global community loves Wikipedia and is intent on ensuring that it goes nowhere.

”In four weeks, we managed to raise over 1 million dollars. I say over 1 million, because donations keep on trickling in. They ranged from big donations given by big-time players, to $1 donations given by students. The fundraiser did a good job at reflecting the diversity of support that we receive,“ Devouard continues.

Considering the increasingly harsh financial climate that most nonprofits have had to deal with in recent years, the Wikipedia fundraiser did exceptionally well.

”My background is in nonprofits, I can tell you that most nonprofits are still dealing with the lingering effects of a slow economy of recent years, which has translated in fewer donations. This has caused many nonprofits to go back to the drawing board, and find new channels of support,” reports Sandra Ordonez, Wikimedia’s Communications Manager.

”Wikipedia has set a new precedent on how to creatively and effectively deal with fundraising challenges. This is because all its fundraising is done online, with little use of traditional and expensive fundraising vehicles, such as banquets and direct mail pieces. As a fundraising professional can attest, this a great accomplishment. However, we are a nonprofit, and depend on donations to exist,” states Ordonez.
