Background Information and Statement of Purpose

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is developing the next iteration of how mobile users interact with Wikipedia. As a mobile UI/UX designer you will be able to research, prototype, and work closely with the engineering teams to retool how the world accesses and contributes to the biggest collection of free and open knowledge on the Internet. Imagine being able to design an experience that will be accessed over 1 billion times globally every month.

The goal of this project is to take into account our current feature roadmap # and to design workflows for our proposed features that will fit the needs of our users.

Scope of Work

  • Given our current mobile roadmap, design a UI that allows us to add new features to both apps and the mobile web while still maintaining responsiveness and a clutter-free user experience
  • Assess the look and feel of the desktop site and suggest what workflows we should carry to mobile
  • Factor in the various languages that Wikipedia exists in including RTL, East Asian scripts, etc
  • Take into account feature phones for simple reading experiences
  • Post designs publicly and work with the Wikimedia community
  • Consider retooling other Wikimedia projects where appropriate

Term of Contract

The contract will commence on November 1st, 2011 at the earliest, for a duration of 6 months. Designs developed through this project will be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike 3.0 Unported License.

Payments, Incentives, and Penalties

The contractor will be paid on a monthly basis with a maximum of 40 hours per week. The contractor will need to cover all legally required deductions, taxes and benefits out of this amount. Approved out-of-pocket expenses may be invoiced for reimbursement.

In the event that either party become dissatisfied with the progress of the contract, and both parties have taken all reasonable steps to resolve or improve the situation without mutual satisfaction, this agreement can be terminated by either party with 15 days’ written notice. These 15 days will be used for transition planning, hand‐off of all work to date, and necessary communication to all constituents. Wikimedia’s fee obligation will be terminated at the end of the 15 days.

Requirements for Proposal Preparation

Contractor should provide a link to an online portfolio and a letter with resume that indicates their qualifications to fulfill the requirements of the RFP.
