Precedence of English terms

Dear colleagues,

could you please make clear the following statement:

These site terms are not to be modified. If there is any inconsistency between these terms and any translation into other languages, the English language version takes precedence.

Does it mean that the English text shall not be changed anytime in the future, or it just means that its meaning shall not be changed in the translations thereof? Drbug 22:58, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My interpretation is that the bolded statement was directed at other wikis who maintain local copies of this policy (for example how the Italian Wikipedia does with the privacy policy: w:it:Wikipedia:Politica relativa alla privacy). The second sentence says that if the translation and the original English version do not say the same thing, then the English version is the one we choose to follow. Also, it's best to ask questions like these on the Meta workspace so that other translators know where to find them and can ask further questions: m:Talk:Translation requests/WMF/Terms of Use/en.
