Wikimedia Foundation Barry Newstead

Barry Newstead is the Chief Global Development Officer (CGDO) of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). He joined in July 2010 and is based in San Francisco. In his role, he leads WMF's efforts to support growth of the Wikimedia projects in the developing world (with a priority focus on India, Brazil and the Arabic-speaking Middle East and North Africa), build mobile and offline products and services that expand the reach of Wikimedia-created knowledge, and facilitates WMF's relationship with affiliated chapters and other organizations around the world. In addition, Barry oversees WMF's communications team and a small research team.

Prior to joining WMF, Barry was a Partner with the Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit consulting organization. During his six years at Bridgespan, he led projects with nonprofit organizations and foundations focused on US education reform, technology-based solutions to social challenges and global development. He led Bridgespan's year-long partnerships with WMF in support of the strategic planning process that culminated in the Wikimedia Movement Strategic Plan. Barry started his career with the Boston Consulting Group where he spent eight years working in Asia, Europe and North America.

Barry was born in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Toronto, Canada. He is a Canadian citizen. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario (Ivey Business School) in London, Ontario and also has a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.
