About me

I am a PhD candidate in Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington where I perform research on HCI, CSCW, UCD and other fun acronyms. My dissertation research involves studying WikiProjects as complex systems and developing tools to support WikiProject-based collaboration. I've also conducted academic research on Wikipedia—on discussions around controversial article topics[1][2], Wikipedia policy [3][4] and new editor engagement[5]. I have also helped develop several other open-source online collaboration systems, like this one.

My first edit to Wikipedia was in 2006. I've been performing gnomish edits since 2008 as Jtmorgan.

I have an MS from UW, and a BA in philosophy from St. John's College. I am a voracious and omnivorous reader, and a passionately amateurish musician. In my (ever-diminishing) spare time, I also enjoy trail running, kayaking and a good game of racquetball.

My work

I work with the Learning & Evaluation team, providing design, development, data analytics, and research guidance for programs and initatives such as the IdeaLab, the Brazil Catalyst Project, Individual Engagement Grants, and the Wikipedia Education Program. As a Wikimedia Research Fellow, I helped design and launch the WP:Teahouse, a new user peer-support hub on the English Wikipedia. I also supported other Community Fellowship projects around improving dispute resolution and user help documents.

I started at the Foundation during the 2011 Summer of Research. I worked on several research sprints focused on new editor participation patterns(1,2), and WikiProjects (1,2).
