Wikimania Scholarship Reviewer

Wikimania Scholarship Program Description

The 2009 Wikimania scholarships will enable active and qualified Wikimedians to travel to and attend the Wikimania conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from August 28-30, 2009.

Goals of position
  • Assistance in determination of scholarship applicant requirements.
  • Assurance of due consideration and speedy response time to Wikimania scholarship applications.
Sample activities
  1. Collaboration in creating Wikimania scholarship criteria.
  2. Participating in periodic online meetings with scholarship manager (presently, Sara Crouse).
  3. Determining suitability of candidates based on established criteria.
  4. Selecting scholarship awardees, and notifying awardees of selection.
  5. Issuing regret letters to non-awarded candidates.

January 15 - April 15, 2009

At volunteer's discretion, however, volunteer should be available for regular scheduled meetings, to be organized with team members in mind.

Qualifications sought
  1. Volunteer has either
    • Prior attendance at Wikimania.
    • Strong knowledge of cross-project Wikimedia community (involved in several local projects, and Commons, Meta, Incubator).
    Individuals with both strengths will be sought, and complementary skills will be taken into consideration.
  2. Good English skills or good Spanish skills and some English; additional languages helpful, but not required.
  3. Discretion and ability to handle confidential applicant information.
  4. Good communication skills and sensitivity to scholarship applicants' needs.
Benefits to volunteer
  1. Gaining experience with doing specific project-related work for the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.
  2. Increased association with the Wikimedia Foundation.
  3. Conference fees and lodging during Wikimania 2009. (Travel costs are volunteers' responsibility)
