An appeal from Wikipedia founder Jimmy WalesNo ads. No profits. No agenda. Wikipedia just isn't like any other big web site. It's not owned by a huge corporation. It doesn't have billions of investment dollars behind it. And, it's not here to generate as much money as possible. Wikipedia is what we make it. It's a community creation, written by volunteers making one entry at a time, every minute of every day. Every time you use Wikipedia, you’re part of it - part of this remarkable pool of human knowledge that has been compiled, maintained, and refined for the simple purpose of sharing. You're part of this unbelievable idea that people all over the world can come together and create something remarkable. Wikipedia is about the power of people like you and me to do extraordinary things. People like us write Wikipedia, one word at a time. And, people like us fund it. It's proof of our collective potential to change the world. Each year at this time, we reach out to ask you and others all across the Wikipedia community to sustain our joint enterprise with a modest donation of $20, $35, $50 or more. We need to protect the space where this important work happens. We need to protect Wikipedia. We want to keep it free of charge and free of advertising. We want to keep it open – you can use the information in Wikipedia any way you want. We want to keep it growing – spreading knowledge everywhere, and inviting participation from everyone. Everyone who uses Wikipedia helps make it stronger, and every donation helps keep this amazing project alive. Thank you. All the best, Jimmy Wales Founder, Wikipedia |
