- About the Wikipedia Usability Initiative
The Wikipedia Usability Initiative was realized by a grant from the U.S.-based Stanton Foundation. The goal of this initiative is to measurably increase the usability of Wikipedia for new contributors by improving the underlying software on the basis of user behavioral studies, thereby reducing barriers to public participation. This position is part of the program team for the initiative.

- Job Purpose
The core responsibility of the Interaction Designer is to bridge the gap between potential contributors and MediaWiki software by identifying the obstacles of editing Wikipedia, and providing the interactive design which makes editing intuitive and self-explanatory in order to promote contributions by new users.

- Job Summary
- Lead strategic design effort of the usability project by identifying obstacles by leading user studies
- Interpret the behavioral data obtained from the usability studies to create effective work flows utilizing storyboards and mock-up designs
- Implement new designs in collaboration with the technical team
- Plan and conduct user tests, and summarize the results
- Collect early user feedback from the Wikipedia community and obtain consensus
- Collaborate effectively with the technical team to deliver the final products
- Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Information Design, Interaction Design, Product Design, or similar experience
- 5 Years experience as a key member of a UI team participating in the complete product development lifecycle of several successfully launched web and/or software applications
- Experience in conducting user testing and research, and understanding of how to leverage user research effectively
- Outstanding design skills including screen layouts, information design, and product design, and must have a great eye for detail
- A refined ability to innovate and visualize concepts
- Experience with HTML and CSS
- Knowledge and/or experience with JavaScript and PHP a big plus
- An understanding of internationalizing and localizing software products a big plus
- Familiarity with wiki software a plus
- Knowledge and experience in mass collaboration and/or wiki projects
- The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural and language contexts.
