JOB TITLE
Lead Operations Architect
REPORTS TO
Director of Operations
JOB PURPOSE
- To own, create and communicate the technical vision and roadmap for the infrastructure needed to run all of Wikimedia web properties
- To ensure the design and implementation of the operating environment is highly reliable, scalable, supportable, and cost effective
- To identify, design and/or develop tools for operating and managing the infrastrucuture
- To drive technical alignment, particularly with Features Engineering and General Engineering
JOB SUMMARY
- Perform and report on periodic technical audits the current infrastructure, highlighting strengths and weaknesses, and propose opportunities for enhancements and/replacements of current infrastructure. Infrastructure here includes Networking Layer, Hardware (Servers, Appliances & Storage), LAMP stack, caching layer, system diagnostic tools and databases
- Investigate and/or prototype suitable new tools and technologies
- Lead the design and deployment of new technologies
- Ensure architectural alignments during the various Engineering phase gate design reviews
- Perform TechOps tools , technology and deployment design reviews and make recommendation
- Mentor and guide software developers and operation staff members
- Lead in the regular due diligence on infrastructure and systems capacity and performance, and recommend mitigations to address rising concerns
- Perform production escalation support and provide aftermath root cause analysis.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Computer Science degree or equivalent work experience
- 8+ years of relevant experience
- Extensive experience with Linux/Unix internals
- Highly competent with LAMP
- Deep understanding of various caching technologies
- Expert level in networking technologies
- Strong experience with High-Performance, scalable web architectures
- Experience with Network and Systems security
- Competent developer in Php, Python and C
- Good knowledge of various server and storage architectures
- Any other free/open software development experience highly welcome
- Comfortable in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment
- Experience with wikis and participatory production environments a plus
- Understanding of the free culture movement a plus
- The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural and language contexts.
