Thank You/Benoit Rochon
Irene. Hurricane Irene. I’ll remember that name all my life.
I’d never seen a hurricane hit Montreal, ever. And I never imagined it would hit the day I organized hundreds of volunteers to photograph local landmarks and upload the pictures to Wikipedia.
But — even with horizontal rain, broken umbrellas and trees bent sideways — we pulled it off. With our determination, and the strength of our volunteer community, we did the impossible.
Soaking wet and cold, these smiling volunteers showed me what Wikipedia is all about. And that spirit of beating the odds with a smile on your face — that’s just so Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is warm. It’s a community of people giving freely to keep knowledge free for everyone, around the world.
I’m totally amazed by this project. And every time I contribute to Wikipedia, I feel like I’m doing something great.
Today, I’m asking you to do something great, too — pitch in and help keep Wikipedia going strong.
Merci beaucoup pour votre assistance!
— Benoit Rochon
Benoit Rochon lives in Montreal, where he works in telecommunications. His first significant Wikipedia article covered the North Pole — a daunting subject for a beginner. Today, along with nature, he covers French-Canadian public figures from art, politics and history. As a native French speaker, his goal is to better represent French-Canadian culture within the broader sphere of French Wikipedia.
Meet some of the editors of Wikipedia.
We would like to introduce you to some of the dedicated volunteers who you empower when you donate. It is our hope that after you read or hear a few of their stories, you'll want to join them in sharing your knowledge with the world by editing Wikipedia.
You can edit Wikipedia!
- Create and improve articles. Wikipedia is still missing articles on many topics. Thousands of articles need expanding, copy editing and additional references.
- Add photos and video. You can upload freely licensed images and other media.
- Become a part of the Wikipedia community. Logging in means all your contributions are attributed to your username, and lets you connect with other Wikipedia contributors.
It's free thanks to our donors
Wikipedia will never run ads. We're powered by small donations from our readers.
