In the wilds of Western Australia, there's a famous sign that says "Outback Starts Here." I'd seen that sign many times, a couple hundred miles down the road — and I wanted a picture.

So I did what any dedicated photographer would do: packed the kids in the car, and went for a drive. I took a picture, then turned around and drove home. More than five hundred miles later, my kids had seen where the Outback starts, and I had my photo of this famous sign.

And now, so does Wikipedia.

Since 2005, I've shared something like 2,000 photos of Western Australia's plants and historical markers. My friends and family think I'm a little bit crazy. After all, why else would someone go out in the rain, climb a fence, and cross a swollen creek, just to get the perfect picture? Or drive for five hundred miles to shoot one little sign?

The truth is, Wikipedia is a fantastic world for photographers like me. I'm always finding new things to shoot, and my style evolves to fit the subject. Every page, there’s a different challenge.

But you know what I love most? Because of me and my camera, a flower growing in my backyard in Western Australia can be seen and studied by people all over the world.

Wikipedia is an incredible resource. But it wouldn't exist without help from people like me and you.

Thank you,

Gideon Digby
