An appeal from Wikimedia Australia
An appeal from Wikimedia AustraliaOn December 10, the State Library of Queensland made a gift of a hard-disk of 50,000 public-domain images to Wikimedia Australia. The images – a mix of people and places from urban, regional and rural Queensland – provide a unique pictorial record of the state.
Over the coming months these images will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, tagged, enriched, commented on and used to improve Wikipedia. As part of this collaboration, Wikimedia Australia will periodically provide the State Library of Queensland with reports describing how these images have been used, discussed, and described. Please join us in thanking State Library of Queensland for this donation. The best way to show your appreciation is to use these images and let us know what you have created. The Wikimedia Commons repository contains 7.7 million media files which are all free, in every sense of the word. This donation of an additional 50,000 images is the fourth largest since the establishment of the Wikimedia Commons project in 2004. Each month 400 million people just like you visit the projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Each year the Wikimedia Foundation appeals to the public for continued funding to support the infrastructure and programs that allow these projects to contain the information you need, when you need it. This year Wikimedia Australia, the local chapter of the international organisation, is coordinating the appeal within Australia. Half of the funds raised are given to the Wikimedia Foundation to support the infrastructure, and half are allocated to programs managed by Wikimedia Australia, such as this collaboration with the State Library of Queensland. We urge you to give generously. The State Library of Queensland is the primary collector of the documentary heritage of the state. The Library is committed to the belief that an empowered and progressive society depends on creative thinking and the sharing of knowledge. Wikimedia Australia, Inc. is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, whose primary aim is to promote equality of opportunity to access and participate in the collaborative creation of Free Cultural Works, especially educational works, and works about Australia, its culture, natural environment, and Australian news and media. The banner is of students at Brisbane State High School gathering to listen to the Anzac Day address, 23 April 1932. |
