Friendly space policy for Wikimedia Foundation events
The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to providing a harassment-free venue and conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, or preferred Creative Commons license (and not limited to those aspects). We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference venue or talks. Any participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference at the discretion of the conference organizers.

Harassment includes but is not limited to offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, or religion. Harassment also includes sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, unwelcome following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the conference organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of conference staff immediately. Conference staff can be identified by special badges.

Staff will be happy to help participants contact hotel/venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the conference. We value your attendance.

::: Organizers: Rachel Farrand, rfarrandwikimedia.org and Gayle Karen Young, gyoungwikimedia.org others (whose contact information will be publicized to event participants on a per-event basis)
::: Local phone numbers for hotel/venue security, local law enforcement, local sexual assault hot line, local emergency and non-emergency medical, and local taxi company to be publicized to event participants as appropriate on a per-event basis

We expect participants to follow these rules at WMF venues, all conference venues, and conference-related social events.
Margins on homepage
Hi. You seem to be the wikicode whiz-kid for this site, so I'll float my idea to you. Do you think the Homepage of this site would look better with a negative top-margin, similar to the English Wikipedia's Main Page? I reckon it'd look a little less, well, amateur than it does now. AGK ([]) 09:44, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
: Hi. I'm not sure what you mean. "margin" usually refers to a CSS attribute. As far as I can tell, the current version of en.wiki's Main Page doesn't use a negative margin anywhere. It does, however, have a hidden <h1> (page title). This is not done with margin hackery, but instead is done via w:en:MediaWiki:Vector.css and w:en:MediaWiki:Monobook.css. Is this what you meant?
Related: Talk:Home#Recent and upcoming changes to Home (March 2013). --MZMcBride ([]) 01:04, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

:: Ah, then yes, using a hidden level-1 header is what I meant. (I'm sure that Enwiki's Main Page used negative margin at some point, perhaps years ago.) I'll make my proposal at the Home talk page. Thanks, AGK ([]) 10:59, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Question
I just noticed the more than one thousand pages in Category:Proposed Deletions. Can I ask why? I get the urge to clean-up, but it seems like in deleting pages such as Donaciones/EUR we may be removing history that we could need later. That sort of page was enormously helpful to me when I ran the fundraiser, in piecing together some of the history that I needed. Philippe (WMF) ([]) 07:00, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
: Hi.
: They're old and unneeded pages. What about <https://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?title=Donaciones/EUR&oldid=8078> was helpful to you? It looks like a standard credit card input form. It's got two edits, both of which are trivial.
: Generally, here's what I see:
:* not much, if any, historical value in most of these templates and pages: they're mostly unoriginal text and designs that are duplicated a zillion times for every country and currency and that haven't been touched since they were used in a particular campaign (or test);
:* anything valuable hasn't been marked for deletion and is available on Meta-Wiki or in the template namespace here;
:* a massive store of pages (we've built up donation pages from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011);
:* a lot of broken or partially broken pages (notice the extra </div> here: Ecwårlaedje);
:* more worryingly, a lot of pages still present what appear to be working input forms (or make your check payable to this random address in Florida that nobody has used for donations since 2005); and
:* this wiki still allows raw HTML, so not being able to figure out what in this uncategorized, unlinked, pile of pages is legitimate and what was legitimate eight years ago (in terms of where these forms submit, what addresses are used, etc.) can actually be problematic, if you know what I mean.
: And, of course, I believe most of the live infrastructure has been quietly moved to payments.wikimedia.org at this point. And with all of this, which should really just amount to me being able to say "housekeeping," there's a 30-day wait period and everyone is getting notified of the impending deletions via talk page note (which should trigger an e-mail), including the former staff who made hundreds of user subpages during their short time with the Wikimedia Foundation and can no longer login here, much less clean up their mess. Some of us are still here.
: For a better picture of the scope, click here and keep clicking "next 500" till you understand what we're dealing with... and these are only the completely uncategorized pages (in the article namespace only, I think). Some pages there I've been categorizing. A lot of it is old junk, though. For the various reasons listed above, it's time to clean.
: Relatedly, if you could give (the other) Ryan admin powers here, that would be great. Please don't make me wake the dead. ;-)
: You're welcome. :-) --MZMcBride ([]) 07:26, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
:: Thank you for the explanation. As I told Ryan, I'm in conversations with Comms right now about how to move forward with userrights here. I hope that we'll have something soon. Philippe (WMF) ([]) 19:18, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
:: Update: Comms (specifically Jay) has requested that I not issue any further userrights here until a conversation has been had about the direction of the wiki and its management. I know that Jay intends to reach out to you on this and to make sure you're an active player in that conversation. Philippe (WMF) ([]) 19:49, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
::: Hi Philippe, does this also apply to temporary flood flags for maintenance related tasks such as [] (which is now complete)? The[]one 20:04, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
:::: No. I thought that would be self-evident (it says "sysop and above" on the userrights page), but I can spell out that it doesn't apply to flood if necessary. Philippe (WMF) ([]) 21:05, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
::::: Thanks, I did see that but then you wrote "not issue any further userrights here" above so wanted to confirm. The[]one 21:36, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, Jay seems to only attempt to take ownership of this wiki whenever someone else tries to get active here. I say "attempt" as the notion that this wiki is owned or operated by the Wikimedia Foundation communications department is rather novel, given the wiki's history and primary active membership/community. At this point, I believe we've been in discussions for years without any action. I don't find this acceptable.

I hope you can feel me rolling my eyes at MediaWiki:Userrights-summary. And as though we needed further evidence of a mess having been left behind here, I'll just cross-reference this insightful post from yesterday: <https://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?diff=90216&oldid=90171>. --MZMcBride ([]) 21:15, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
Proposed deletions
In general I think the 2011 stuff is likely okay, but that is up to Megan and Zack as to whether or not they want to keep them around for posterity. Also note that we get a not-insignificant number of donations to the old pages. If you can leave behind a redirect to https://donate.wikimedia.org that would be awesome. For the 2012 stuff, those are WMFr pages, so it would probably be best to check with them. Thanks. -Pgehres (WMF) ([]) 00:39, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
: Hi. Thanks for the note. I'll ping Megan and Zack again about the proposed deletions. I think I'm also going to go ahead and bump the proposed deletion time to 90 days. We just had a report trickle in today about a particular page that's apparently still being used and it was tagged for over 30 days.
: I already pinged the fundraising people on their mailing list. There wasn't much feedback. I think most of the live infrastructure is now living at donate.wikimedia.org. I don't think an automatic redirect is a great idea. Technically, we could #REDIRECT all of these pages, but I think de-cluttering is a good idea. The proliferation here has been a bit nasty. So much repetition and nearly identical content.
: That said, I think we should be able to hack something up, basically prettifying the page a user sees when a page has been deleted... include a "donate" link and a "return to home" link. And a few old fundraising pages will be marked historical with a note at the top telling people how they can donate today. Most of these pages seem to have very little historical value, though. --MZMcBride ([]) 03:28, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
: P.S. Thanks for this edit. That had been bothering me.
Apology for removal of admin rights
MZ,
I'm sorry for the abrupt removal of admin rights on this wiki, which wasn't announced in advance. We've been talking internally for a while about making the governance structure of this wiki more clear, i.e., decisions regarding content and practices in this wiki are ultimately up to WMF staff. There may be projects during which it makes sense to assign temporary adminship to volunteers, as well, but we wanted to start with a clear separation of roles and responsibilities.

I apologize, though, for the hasty implementation of this decision! I didn't intend to express any disrespect or distrust. On the contrary, I'm very grateful for all the work you and other volunteers have done on the Wikimedia Foundation wiki over the years, and I hope you won't be too discouraged by this experience. I'll be posting an update about the next steps for wikimediafoundation.org on the wikimedia-l mailing list soon.

I'll take a look at understanding what you're working on when I get back from vacation next Monday and we can talk more then.
Hi. I'm not sure why you chose the page title "Vision (pt)". The proper page title would be "Visão", wouldn't it? == Italicizing short quote ==

Hi. Regarding this edit, why are you doing this? If you feel the quote should be italicized, you should update the master template and sync to Meta-Wiki and elsewhere. I can't understand why you'd add explicit markup to every user page rather than setting it as the default or allowing users to italicize or not on an individual basis. --MZMcBride ([]) 22:13, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

: Hi. It's because there are variations between how people use the short quote parameter. For example, Philippe, Sumana and Jay use personal quotes, whilst Janice and Rachel use quotes from other people (also referencing their names) and there are also cases when users make use of more than one quote, as Steph does. Applying this markup in the template itself would end up with authors' names being italicised, which isn't what I intend. == Apology for removal of admin rights==

Hi THO,
I'm sorry for the abrupt removal of admin rights on this wiki, which wasn't announced in advance.

You know where to find me if you want to talk, and I hope this finds you well!
swap comma & decimal point
mav, somebody's been asking about the possibility of changing the template:fund drive text to swap comma & decimal point for the european languages (specifically de). '$50,000' looks like '$50.000' to us and is a bit odd. ;)

If it's possible to tweak the templates to do this sort of thing without too much trouble that would be great. --Brion VIBBER 05:02, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Hi. I just had a curious time. I saw on day 2, a european donation made by a guy called Philip Stoop. My coworker is called Philippe Stoop. As far as I thought, no one knew anything about Wikipedia in my firm. Perhaps it is him, perhaps not. But very disturbing to discover this. ant

:Why disturbing? Would that not be a good thing? :) --mav
::Not sure... well, some of my co workers know now, I am a bit bugged by this.
Hi, thanks for the history repor :-)

We really need to identify more of the uncategorized as well as to give more precision one way or another about the travel expenses. As is, we just cant leave that this way. I can foresee huge discussions and bad vibes for the fundraising. Anthere

:That is already planned. I just happened to finish the draft right before Jimmy had to leave for a conference. He has already been sent the spreadsheet concerning travel and uncategorized items. --mav

Hiya

I was told the paypal interface of french page is in english (rather than french).

I was told

*FoeNyx* au cas ou il sait pas et pour eviter qu'il cherche, faut juste rajouter ou dans les forms qui envoient les infos a paypal
*FoeNyx* lc comme "language code"

Hmmm, can you fix that ? I dare not :-) Anthere

:Argh! So that is how PayPal changed it (this has annoyed me for some time). The way they had it before was that anything in the /fr/ directory on their site was French. Then after I created the templates they changed it so that no longer worked. But your above info should be what I need to fix this. Thank you for the report! :) --mav
Wikimedia Germany donations
Hi Mav,

Our chief of finance Henriette wrote on Friday, that she email you the latest donations-statistics for WikiMedia Germany, but the Fund drive page does not show any of this yet. Did you not receive the email?

You find the latest results for Germany on the WikiMedia Germany page, but it is in german. Can you read german a bit?

If you really did not get the email, please let Wikimedia germany know that by sendin an email to the Board vorstand@wikimedia.de , so we all of the board will have your correct email address.
Hi Daniel,
Can you if possible also give updates of balance of the dexia-account? I am personal very interested in those figures. I like to know how Europa is donation. And if the people include a text message like the PayPal-users do, can or will the also be put online?
If it is not easy to do so a update only every 5 or 7 days is also fine. Greetings, Walter 20:46, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

::"Postcards"?? You do not have internet-banking access? That surprises me strongly. Can I help? The bank where the account is is very close to me. I was present when Jimbo opened that bank account and did the preparations for it. Walter 21:22, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

:::Nope. I do not have online access. Do you have any kind of access? --Daniel Mayer 21:31, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

::::At present; no. That account is opened around December 2004, when there was FOSDEM in Brussels. I have done the lobbying for the creation of a European bank account in the name of the Wikimedia Foundation so there was no need anymore to have a credit card and waste money on the high PayPal fees. When Jimbo was here in Belgium he, Angela and I have gone to the Dexia-bank and opened the account in the name of the Wikimedia Foundation, Florida. The guy of the bank told Jimbo that he needed to fill in some forms and fax them to them so he could get access to the internet banking.
::::I assumed that Jimbo/Wikimedia Foundation had done that. What can you do with a bank account without internet-access to it?
::::If you contact Dexia you can probably still get internet access to it. The telephone number of that office is +3224649540 and the fax number is +3224649549. You can also use me to go to there to try to fix this. But I have not access to that account so I can not sign anything in the name of the Wikimedia Foundation.
Somehow a statement from me "I continue to oppose having advertising on
Wikipedia" is transformed into a headline "Wikipedia chief considers taking ads"
Maybe this quote can be put on the foundation website? If people think that there will come ads on wikipedia the will maybe be more reluctant to donate? --Walter 16:19, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
April Fool's day
Hello Daniel,

In the idea of april fools day the dutch wikipedia said that the first 500 people could get 50% reduction to a years subscription on nl.wikipedia . We got about 250 emails, of whitch about 75 seriously. I am sending about 200 emails back to the senders, with some information about wikipedia and how to donate etc. I would be very gratefull if you could keep an eye on the Dutch donations the coming days, and tell me afterwards if it rised somehow. Just my personal interest. I don't want to know personal information, I am just curious how people react when they are personally approached and asked to donate money to the WMF. I sent them to the Dutch donationpage on this wiki, so they might use as well paypal as dexia. Could you please keep an eye on it? Thanks a lot. == Local advertisements ==

Hi,

Since you have something to do with finance here, can you tell me if it's possible to get funding for local advertisements on national TV here in Israel? I checked the budget and saw nothing about this, but I thought it wont hurt to ask. I am not sure how much it will cost to do this, but I expect it to be between 500$ to 1000$. Although the Hebrew Wikipedia is doing well, we would like to encourage more educated Hebrew speaking people to join and donate their time (and money ;-) to the Wikipedia purpose. == Old pages on this wiki ==

Hi mav. I recruited/am recruiting some folks to help out with cleaning up this wiki in an effort to hopefully eventually de-fishbowl ("liberate") it. As part of that process, we're looking at pages that use raw HTML (list here: HTML) with an eye toward eliminating or at least greatly reducing the amount of raw HTML here. Most of these pages are old and what I'd like to do is blank them for a month, see if anything breaks, and then delete them, assuming nobody objects. An example of this kind of page might be Template:DonateGBP.

If you could take a look at HTML when you have a minute just to make sure we don't delete anything important, that'd be great. Hope you're well. --MZMcBride ([]) 05:48, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Apology for removal of admin rights
Dear Daniel,

Please do reach out to me if there's anything else I can do.
::I believe I've done it for you properly - if you click on you will be able to see a "diff link" to see what I've changed. The purpose of a template is so that you don't have to copy all that div coding all over your user page making it more difficult to edit it when you want to change a few things. If you now click on the edit link for your user page, you will see that it will be a lot easier for you to update to or change the text. :: I rewrote some of the template. I'm still not in love with the design, but it's fine for mow. It shouldn't be too difficult to copy this template to the English Wikipedia and re-use it there. Maybe THO can help you with that. --MZMcBride ([]) 20:34, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

:::Thank you!! :) MZMcBride, do you have feedback on the design? My hope is to tinker it to "good enough" to convey "who I am, what I do, how to contact me, and what I love about working for WMF" (the last box hasn't yet been included - I'm thinking across the bottom of the template...) enough that we can roll it out so all the WMF folks can have it on their pages so that when people click on names under "staff and contractors", it goes to a user page that has standard info on the top, and custom info on the bottom. Gyoung ([]) 26 February 2012 (UTC)

:::: https://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?oldid=79482 is what the template looks like with an image. I think the "Contact me" box looks awkward with so much space toward the bottom and I think that the added space (below the job title) introduced by the image's height isn't the most desirable. It's a template, though, so it can be tweaked later as necessary. --MZMcBride ([]) 20:51, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Old job descriptions and job postings
Hi. There are number of old job descriptions and old job postings on this wiki (:Category:Job Descriptions). Someone asked me to update Chief Technical Officer and I remembered that this was a larger issue that needs to be addressed. I imagine it's probably on your radar, but it'd be good to clean these pages up at some point. Either by updating them or by deleting them (or archiving them to Meta-Wiki, maybe). You've stripped a bunch of users of their user rights? --MZMcBride ([]) 02:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
: Yes, I am. More specifically, I'm limiting admin rights on this wiki to Foundation staff and board members. You'll still be able to do everything a normal user can do, and if you have a particular project you're working on which brings with it a good justification for admin rights, I'm sure people will be happy to give you those rights for the duration of that project. :: Why the change? --MZMcBride ([]) 03:06, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
:::We've been discussing this for awhile, and the thought is that it's ultimately the Foundation's web presence, not the community's web presence. A useful parallel to consider might be how userrights are given to staffers on the community wikis; they're distributed as and when they're needed for a specific task. In some cases this can be someone's job, in some cases this can be a particular project, but we try not to involve staffers overly in the administration of community work. I hope you're well! I'm heading out of town and will be unresponsive for a few days. ==Wikimedia Foundation Guidelines Covering Pluralism, Internationalism, and Diversity in Hiring==
The following are Wikimedia Foundation guidelines covering pluralism, internationalism and diversity in hiring. Please refer to the Hiring Process guidelines for further guidance related to hiring.

Statement of Policy
The Wikimedia Foundation is an internationally active non-profit organization headquartered in San Francisco, California. The Wikimedia Foundation is committed to diversity as one of its core values, and, as part of routine operations its staff interacts with a wide range of individuals and organizations around the world.

Therefore, the Wikimedia Foundation aspires to establish and maintain a staff with experience working and living outside the United States, the ability to speak and write languages other than English, and the ability to work productively with people with a wide diversity of demographic and cultural characteristics, including ethnicity, nationality, gender, age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, religion, values and attitudes.

The guidelines below apply to all hiring conducted by the Wikimedia Foundation, and aim to outline our recruitment and retention practices related to pluralism, internationalism and diversity.

Procedures and Guidelines
* Job openings at the Wikimedia Foundation are routinely posted internationally (at a minimum, on the Wikimedia Foundation website), and will be specifically targeted to non-U.S. job posting venues as appropriate.

* Hiring criteria for positions at the Wikimedia Foundation routinely characterize as desirable 1., languages additional to English and 2., experience living or working outside the United States, and/or experience working with organizations or individuals outside the United States.

* Each hiring interview will include at least one question designed to assess candidates' ability to work productively with people with a wide range of demographic and cultural characteristics.

* Applications for open positions at the Wikimedia Foundation are not routinely excluded if the applicant is not San Francisco-based. The requirements of a given position will determine whether remote work is feasible, but the Wikimedia Foundation, in general, is open to remote work as a possibility for all positions.

* When the Wikimedia Foundation hires a remote worker, that worker will, early in his or her tenure, be invited to work out of the San Francisco office for a period of not less than one week, during which the Foundation will pay his or her living expenses. The purpose of this will be to orient and acclimatize the new person. At the discretion of the Executive Director, and in circumstances in which it meets the Foundation's goals, the Foundation may choose to extend a new remote worker's stay in San Francisco for a period of up to three months.

* The Wikimedia Foundation will stage one all-staff meeting per year, at its San Francisco offices. All non-San Francisco staff will be invited to attend this meeting.

* When the Wikimedia Foundation engages workers outside the United States, it will compensate them appropriately. The Wikimedia Foundation will not attempt to engage in hiring or contracting processes that unfairly disadvantage workers outside the United States, relative to those who work in the United States.

* In the event that a successful job candidate is located outside the United States at the time of hiring, but needs work visa support in order to relocate to work in the San Francisco office, it will be provided. Offers extended to applicants who do not have, at the time of offer, the legal right to work in the United States, will be conditional upon the successful receipt of a work visa.

* Our standard practice is to offer employees support with TN or H1B visas. However, we recognize that these visas are temporary in nature, and that it is not possible to predict or ensure renewal. Therefore, in the interests of stability in staffing, the Wikimedia Foundation will support work visa employees to transition to U.S. “permanent residency” status, in circumstances in which 1., the employee desires to make the transition, 2., the employee has (or nearly has) successfully completed his or her probationary period, and 3., the transition supports Wikimedia Foundation goals and objectives. Permanent residency status will only be pursued with the approval of the Executive Director.

* Nothing in this document is intended to contravene or circumvent any relevant employment-related law. It is the intention and goal of Wikimedia Foundation at all times to comply with any such applicable laws. Nothing herein shall permit basing employment selection on an individual’s national origin, race, ethnicity or any other basis protected by law.

Gyounghttps://foundation.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Gyoung&diff=79479User:Gyoung2012-02-26T20:38:12Z
Gyoung:

Hi Gyoung,

I'm updating the Staff and contractors page and noticed that you have an account on this wiki, please can you create your userpage with a short biography and other introductory information about yourself and the work you do. :: I don't think posting to a talk page is being difficult. I honestly have no idea what the hell it means or what it's for. I can probably find a few others who are equally confused. --MZMcBride 03:20, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
:::Thanks for the feedback! We wanted to convey the sense of the people who work here that we love the WMF mission and from what I've seen in my short time at the Foundation, really think about things a /lot/. As an example, my husband doesn't think he's had a conversation with me since I started at WMF that didn't have some reference to work. :) (We're still figuring out if that's a good thing.) I DO think I'm very fortunate to love my job. That said, if the quote doesn't convey that and doesn't make sense for people, it's really good feedback and we'll keep evolving the page until it does. I believe the overarching "Help wanted for changing the world." should be changed to "Help wanted to change the world." Emphasis added only for illustration here, not to suggest it should be done on the actual design. "To" provides a stronger sentiment and flows a bit more naturally, in my opinion.
