The Wikimedia Board of Trustees manages the foundation and supervises the disposition and solicitation of donations. The Board of Trustees are the ultimate corporate authority in the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (article IV, sec. 1 of the Wikimedia Foundation bylaws).

The Board has the power to direct the activities of the foundation. It also has the authority to set membership dues, discipline and suspend members (article III), and to amend the corporate bylaws (article VI).

The Board consists of five directors. Since June 2004, two of these seats have been elected. In each case, voting was open to all active users who were eligible for suffrage. The latest vote was held over three weeks in June and July 2005; the representatives elected that July will retain their seats for two years.
Summary
If you only read the Wikimedia project websites, no more information is collected than is typically collected in server logs by web sites in general.

If you contribute to the Wikimedia projects, you are publishing every word you post publicly. If you write something, assume that it will be retained forever. This includes articles, user pages and talk pages. Some limited exceptions are described below.

Publishing on the wiki and public data
Simply visiting the web site does not expose your identity publicly (but see private logging below).

When you edit any page in the wiki, you are publishing a document. This is a public act, and you are identified publicly with that edit as its author.

Identification of an author
When you publish a page in the wiki, you may be logged in or not.

If you are logged in, you will be identified by your user name. This may be your real name if you so choose, or you may choose to publish under a pseudonym, whatever user name you selected when you created your account.

If you have not logged in, you will be identified by your network IP address. This is a series of four numbers which identifies the internet address from which you are contacting the wiki. Depending on your connection, this number may be traceable only to a large internet service provider, or specifically to your school, place of business, or home. It may be possible that the origin of this IP address could be used in conjunction with any interests you express implicitly or explicitly by editing articles to identify you even by private individuals.

It may be either difficult or easy for a motivated individual to connect your network IP address with your real-life identity. Therefore if you are very concerned about privacy, you may wish to log in and publish under a pseudonym. When using a pseudonym, your IP address will not be available to the public, but it will be stored on the wiki servers for a relatively short amount of time. Thus it will be available to developers and may be released under certain circumstances (see below).

If you use a company mail server from home or telecommute and use a DSL or cable internet connection, it is likely to be very easy for your employer to identify your IP address and find all of your IP based Wikimedia project contributions. Using a user name is a better way of preserving your privacy in this situation. However, remember to disconnect yourself after using a pseudonym to avoid allowing others to use your identity.

Cookies
The wiki will set a temporary session cookie (PHPSESSID) whenever you visit the site. If you do not intend to ever log in, you may deny this cookie, but you cannot log in without it. It will be deleted when you close your browser session.

More cookies may be set when you log in, to avoid typing in your user name (or optionally password) on your next visit. These last up to 30 days. You may clear these cookies after use if you are using a public machine and don't wish to expose your username to future users of the machine. (If so, clear the browser cache as well.)

Passwords
Many aspects of the Wikimedia projects community interactions depend on the reputation and respect that is built up through a history of valued contributions. User passwords are the only guarantee of the integrity of a user's edit history. All users are encouraged to select strong passwords and to never share them. No one shall knowingly expose the password of another user to public release either directly or indirectly.

Private logging
Every time you visit a web page, you send a lot of information to the web server. Most web servers routinely maintain access logs with a portion of this information, which can be used to get an overall picture of what pages are popular, what other sites link to this one, and what web browsers people are using. It is not the intention of the Wikimedia projects to use this information to keep track of legitimate users.

These logs are used to produce the site statistics pages; the raw log data is not made public, and is normally discarded after about two weeks.

Here's a sample of what's logged for one page view:

64.164.82.142 - - [21/Oct/2003:02:03:19 +0000]
"GET /wiki/draft_privacy_policy HTTP/1.1" 200 18084
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_projects:Village_pump"
"Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/85.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/85.5"

Log data may be examined by developers in the course of solving technical problems, in tracking down badly-behaved web spiders that overwhelm the site, or very rarely to correlate usernames and network addresses of edits in investigating abuse of the wiki.

Policy on release of data derived from page logs
It is the policy of Wikimedia that personally identifiable data collected in the server logs will not be released by the developers who have access to it, except as follows:

# In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement
# With permission of the affected user
# To Jimbo Wales, his legal counsel, or his designee, when necessary for investigation of abuse complaints.
# Where the information pertains to page views generated by a spider or bot and its dissemination is necessary to illustrate or resolve technical issues.
# Where the user has been vandalising articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targetting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers
# Where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of the Wikimedia Foundation, its users or the public.

Wikimedia policy does not permit public distribution of such information under any circumstances, except as described above.

Sharing information with third parties
Except where otherwise specified, all text added to Wikimedia projects is available for reuse under the terms of the GFDL, except for Wikinews, where the text is available under a Creative Commons License.

Wikimedia will not sell or share private information, such as email addresses, with third parties, unless you agree to release this information, or it is required by law to release the information.

Security of information
The Wikimedia Foundation makes no guarantee against unauthorized access to any information you provide. This information will be available to all developers with access to the servers.

E-mail, mailing lists and IRC
E-mail
You may provide your e-mail address in your Preferences. This allows other logged-in users may send email to you through the wiki (unless you disable this in your preferences). Your address will not be revealed to them unless you respond, or possibly if the email bounces. The email address may be used by the Wikimedia Foundation to communicate with users on a wider scale.

If you do not provide an email address, you will not be able to reset your password if you forget it. However, you may contact one of Wikimedia's developers to enter a new mail address in your preferences.

You can remove your email address from your preferences at any time to prevent it being used.

Mailing lists
If you subscribe to one of the project mailing lists, your address will be exposed to any other subscriber. The list archives of most of Wikimedia's mailing lists are public, and your address may find itself quoted in messages. The list archives are also archived by Gmane services. Mails are usually not deleted or modified, but it may be done in extreme cases.

Information email addresses
Some email addresses (see below) may forward mail to a team of volunteers trusted by the community to use a ticket system (OTRS) to view them and answer them. Mail sent to the system is not publicly visible, but is visible to this group of Wikimedia editors. By sending a mail to one of these addresses, your address may become public within this group. The OTRS team may discuss the contents of your mail with other contributors in order to best answer your query.

Addresses that direct to OTRS system are:
*info-de@wikipedia.org
*info-en@wikipedia.org

Mail to board@wikimedia.org or to board member's private addresses may also be forwarded to the OTRS team.

IRC
IRC channels are not officially part of Wikimedia proper. By participating to an IRC channel, your IP address will be exposed to other participants. Different channels have different policies on whether logs may be published.

User data
Data on users, such as the times at which they edited and the number of edits they have made are publicly available via "user contributions" lists, and occasionally in aggregated forms published by other users.

Removal of user accounts
Once created, user accounts can not be removed. It may be possible for a developer to change the username on an account, but you will need to request this yourself. The Wikimedia Foundation does not guarantee that a name will be changed on request. See meta:Right to vanish for further details.

Whether specific user information is deleted is dependant on the deletion policies of the project that contains the information.

Deletion of content
Deleting text from Wikimedia projects does not really delete them. In normal articles, anyone can look at a previous version and see what was there. If an article is "deleted", any sysop/administrator, meaning almost anyone trusted not to abuse the deletion capability, can see what was deleted. Only a developer can permanently delete information from the Wikimedia projects and there is no guarantee this will happen except in response to legal action.
Phroziachttps://foundation.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Anthere&diff=11002User talk:Anthere2005-11-04T22:51:39Z
Phroziac: Spaces

*There is a +134.73 USD difference between the Old balance on this page and the USD end of year balance on Wikimedia PayPal donations for 2003. Selecting all "completed transactions" in PayPal should list all completed transactions, but it obviously does not. I will have to talk to PayPal support to resolve this issue. --Daniel Mayer.
In between cans of Moxie, we picked his brain about the evolution of wiki, copyright, and the Wikipedia community. Afterward, he came onto IRC to hang out in #wikipedia for a while, where he was duly lauded. See our interview with Ward Cunningham.

The Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License was the most supported
license in the recent poll at Licensure Poll.

Many of the options had very few voters. Of the options with more than
12 voters, the GFDL had only 21% support, and the Wikinews License 0.2
had 60% support (or 64% from Wikinewsies). Fewer people voted on the
Wikinews License option than on the Creative Commons one, meaning 31
people in total supported CC-BY, compared to just 17 supporting WNL
2.0.

With over 87% support from Wikinewsies in the poll, and 82% support
overall, CC-BY has now been agreed upon by the Wikimedia Foundation to
be the new license for all existing and future versions of Wikinews.
Any edits made previously remain public domain - it is only new edits
that will need to be under this Creative Commons License.

The license can be read at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/
(that page links to other language versions of the license, and the
full legal code).

Brion has changed the site settings, so the meta data of the wikis
should state they are now CC-BY. However, manually created pages such
as http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Copyright will need to be
updated. MediaWiki namespace pages may need changing if they had been
edited previously. Pages that might need changing include:

By Alterego - august 2005

The Wikimedia Foundation has experienced an exciting amount of growth across all projects. The growth is attributed in part to more the more than three thousand users who register to contribute per month, and in part to the Foundation’s commitment to meet increased popularity with increased capacity.

Wikipedia in particular has experienced a dramatic rise in publishing, with English Wikipedians creating more than 1,250 new articles every day at a 7% monthly increase. With more than 650,000 articles, the trend indicates that as the overall corpus grows, so too does the percent of new articles created in relation to it.

In the German language, Wikipedianer have been busy too, writing articles at a clip of 6% per month. As the total number of words grows at 8% per month, the depth of information increases in proportion to the breadth. According to Jakob Voss, a member of the German board, 20% of all German articles are focused on biographies of people.

Speakers of nearly 200 languages have come together in Wikipedia communities, resulting in similar - sometimes never-before-seen - linguistic phenomena. According to the Wikipedia Signpost, more than 100 different language Wikipedias each have more than 100 articles. With some of the languages being quite obscure, this may be the first time their culture has had a compendium of information such as an encyclopedia.

Most popular article for each top 10 wiki entering June

#Polish: Great Britain
#Portuguese: Brasil
#Spanish: Kufra
#Italian: Italy

Over all languages, there is a 10% growth of new articles per month, totaling 1.8 million at present. Between these articles there are 500 million words, 30 million inter-wiki links and 1.3 million links to other websites. These were contributed between 30 million edits by 60,000 registered, and many more anonymous users.

Having so much quality content freely available has made Wikipedia an attractive destination for visitors. According to data donated to the Foundation by Hitwise, the Wikipedia.org domain surpassed Dictionary.com as the most popular reference site in late May. This followed a 618% increase in share among traffic from all websites in the previous year. In the two months following the milestone, Wikipedia strengthened its lead by more than 25%, increasing its share of traffic to all reference sites by an additional 92%.

Search engines have increasingly recognized the encyclopedia’s value to visitors, sending 66% of all incoming traffic. Google, in particular, sends 50% of this traffic, taking an overall share of 33%. In late May, Google briefly increased the English Wikipedia’s PageRank ™ to 9 out of a possible 10, formally recognizing it as one the most trusted websites. This culminated in a great flurry of spidering as Google went from having 3 million Wikipedia pages indexed in March to more than 25 million in July. Pages from the Wikipedia.org domain currently occupy .32% of all pages in Google’s index, a number that synchs closely to the .20% of all search engine traffic that Wikipedia attracts. Wikipedia is now the 22nd most recommended site by search engines, and the gap continues to widen.

Among the thousands of keyword searches that Wikipedia ranks high for, several in particular consistently draw considerable traffic. These include Bobby Fischer, Jacques Chirac, Vladimir Putin and, most notably, Pope John Paul II.
Having been established as a primary source of papal news, when Pope Benedict XVI was elected an article was created instantly and received over 2,400 edits in its first day. It was then cited heavily by blogs and news sources such as Reuters, causing a large influx of traffic, peaking at 2,100 requests per second. While this number was spectacular at the time, only two months later it is common to receive over 2,500 requests per second.

As increased and better content attracts more users, who in turn expend more server resources, it has been necessary to greatly expand the Wikimedia server grid to several locations in Florida, France, Amsterdam and soon, South Korea.

There are now more than 100 servers, which, added up, have 260 gigahertz of processing power, 210 gigabytes of memory, and 16 terabytes of hard drive space.

As increased capacity is also a factor in attracting new visitors, these numbers can be expected to increase significantly.

A Board meeting was held on IRC on October 1, to discuss and approve the Foundation budget for 2005Q4. The meeting was attended by the Board of Trustees (Angela Beesley, Michael Davis, Florence Devouard, Tim Shell, and Jimmy Wales), the Chief Financial Officer (Daniel Mayer), and the Local Chapters Coordinator (Delphine Ménard).

The budget is posted at: 4 (1 October to 31 December)

The following points were discussed during the meeting:

*Hardware costs: $190,000
**We failed to spend all budgeted funds in previous quarter; however, this was not because we did not need the new servers but because of lack of money and time. Hence we should not adjust 4th quarter expenses down.
**Domas Mitzuas will itemize hardware needs and assign dollar amounts to each item

*Hosting charges: $24,000
**New servers will lead to faster site will lead to dramatic increase in bandwidth costs
**Will see about moving images to other servers where we are given free bandwidth

*Domain names: $500
**Domains set to expire will cost around $100
**Additional money allocated for new domains that are donated or which we might plausibly want to use
**Disagreement about how agressive we should be gobbling up new domains, with Jimmy, Daniel, and Michael arguing for agressiveness, which strategy we shall use for time being. Further debate to follow.

*Personel:
**Estimated insuarance and tax costs on top of regular salary for executive assitant and chief technical officer.
**Office assistant needed for routine tasks such as stuffing envelopes, which executive assistant is far too busy for; will try to get volunteers for this position, but budgeted $3000 for a part-time (20 hours per week) employee.
**Hardware assistant item increased from $1500 to $2000 in anticipation of many new servers being purchased

*Travel:
**$7500 for travel will include 3 persons to WSIS in Tunis
**For sake of transparency, Daniel will publish actual travel expenses as he gets better access to relevent data

*Legal expenses, insurance, and trademarks:
**Bumped up to $10,000 from $4000
**anticipating more in the way of trademark applications
**Will be getting legal insurance, which is an unknown cost but possibly more expensive then previously anticipated
**Part of this is money to be set aside as a reserve for future legal issues

*Office expenses:
**$5900 for rent plus furniture and a new computer; WMF now occupying a larger office with more people (executive assistant, office assistants in near future), hence an increase in office expenses.

*Chapter startup money:
**$2000 a quarter as decided upon last budget meeting, with nothing new causing us to change this

*Promotional:
**3000 to cover some but not all of the items listed here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_budget/2005/Q4/promo

*Financial costs
**Fees related to fundraising, estimated to be $10,000 for every $200,000 we raise

*Miscellaneous expenses:
**Set at around 2% of total budget, or $6000

*Reserve:
**Set at around 10% of budget, or $29,200

*Next fund drive:
**Current accounts are $160,000 short of budgeted expenses
**New drive to start December 1
**Details to be worked out at next fundraising meeting, to be scheduled soon
Phroziachttps://foundation.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Gfdl&diff=10954Template:Gfdl2005-10-27T22:00:28Z
Phroziac: fix typo that made redirect not work

The Quarto caught up with the father of the wiki movement before breakfast on an early Oregon morning, while he was recovering from the recent Pattern Languages of Programs (PLoP) conference held in Illinois. In between cans of Moxie, we picked his brain about the evolution of wiki, copyright, and the Wikipedia community. Afterward, he came onto IRC to hang out in #wikipedia for a while, where he was duly lauded. See our interview with Ward Cunningham.

The Quarto also tracked down Lawrence Lessig, Stanford law professor, founder and chairman of Creative Commons, and free culturesmith, in a lull at the end of a long December day. In a whirlwind session, he talked to us about copyright, copyleft, barriers to free culture, legal pitfalls for Wikipedia, and fighting the good fight. read more.

The Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (also known simply as Wikimedia) is the parent organization of various free-content projects, most notably Wikipedia, the award-winning online encyclopedia.

Wikimedia is a non-profit corporation organized under the laws of Florida, USA. Its existence was officially announced by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales on June 20, 2003. In January 2004, Jimmy Wales appointed Tim Shell and Michael Davis to the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation. In June 2004, an election was held for two user representative Board members. Following one month of campaigning and two weeks of online voting, Angela Beesley and Florence Nibart-Devouard were elected to join the board. They were reelected on the following year.

The goals of the foundation
The goals of the foundation are to maintain and develop free-content, wiki-based projects and to provide the full contents of those projects to the public free of charge. In addition to managing the already developed multilingual general encyclopedia, Wikipedia, there is a multi-language dictionary and thesaurus named Wiktionary, an encyclopedia of quotations named Wikiquote and a collection of e-book resources aimed specifically toward students (such as textbooks and annotated public domain books) named Wikibooks. The Foundation also manages a memorial collection of articles about the September 11 attacks and the operations of the largely dormant Nupedia project (which is not a wiki, but is open content). All projects work thanks to a wiki software package called MediaWiki.

The Wikimedia Foundation owns the Wikimedia servers along with the domain names and trademarks of all Wikimedia projects and MediaWiki. Contributors retain the copyright to their own content and the GNU FDL license used on these projects prevents anyone from controlling the content.

The continued growth of each Wikimedia project is dependent on donations. The Wikimedia Foundation aims to increase revenue by finding alternative means of support, including grants and sponsorship.

The name Wikimedia is a portmanteau of wiki and multimedia.

Organization
Bylaws
The bylaws of Wikimedia Foundation Inc. may be viewed online.

The Board of Trustees
A Wikimedia Board of Trustees manage the nonprofit and supervise the disposition and solicitation of nonprofit donations.

Income
As of January 2005, Wikimedia is funded in most part through private donations, but also through several grants and gifts of servers and hosting (see benefactors).

There are regularly discussions of finding alternate sources of income, such as applying for grants or selling WikiReaders. For the time being, we want the Wikimedia projects to remain free of advertisements. There has also been discussion of selling a print version of a significant portion of Wikipedia, such as a Wikipedia 1.0 project. Finally, a membership system is planned for 2005.

For more information about donations, see our fundraising page.

Liabilities
For details on what we have done with donations since the start of 2004, and how we plan to use our funds, see What we use the money for.

One of the main expenses for the Foundation is hardware.
* Description of the hardware that powers Wikimedia : Wikimedia servers, hardware orders
* Frequently updated status of this hardware : Wikimedia hardware status

Six servers are now being hosted in France as squids, with another eleven in the Netherlands, and a further 23 in South Korea donated by Yahoo. The hosting and bandwidth have been donated.

The Foundation currently employs two members of staff: Kyle Anderson, the Florida Hardware Manager and Brion Vibber, the Chief Technical Officer.

Domain registration is another part of Wikimedia's liabilities. The Foundation already owns some of its active and secondary/tangentially-related w:en:domain names, while others are still free or already owned. see also m:Domain names.

See also meta:Wikimedia budget for a detailed list of other potential expenses. See budget for official budgets.

Local chapters
There are presently three active Wikimedia chapters.
* Wikimedia Deutschland, founded on June 13, 2004
* Wikimédia France, founded on October 23th, 2004
* Wikimedia Italia, founded on June 17th, 2005

Other local chapters are also being planned.
