Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and wiki enthusiast, and founder of the Wikipedia project.

Jimmy was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1966, and is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He worked as Research Director at Chicago Options Associates, a futures and options trading firm then located in Chicago. In the mid-1990s he started Bomis, a search portal focusing on aspects of pop culture, one of the first users of the freely licensed data of the Open Directory Project.

In 1999, Jimmy had the concept of a freely distributable encyclopedia and founded Nupedia, by hiring philosopher Larry Sanger as editor-in-chief and assigning two programmers to write software for it. Nupedia failed, perhaps due to being a top-down cathedral model, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is the ultimate bazaar. After two years of working with the Nupedia concept, that team opened Wikipedia to help channel content into Nupedia; Wikipedia became an instant success, but not in the envisioned way, and Nupedia was shut down. In 2003, Jimmy set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization, to support Wikipedia and its sister projects.

In 2004, Jimmy founded Wikia. He was appointed a fellow of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society in mid-2005, and in October of 2005 joined the Board of Directors of Socialtext, a provider of wiki technology to businesses. I think that it's safe to assume that editors here know how to log in without the aid of a "log in" link at the top. I think that it would make the site look a lot cleaner if we CSS-ed out the login link. This can be done, and still allow logged in users to keep the user tools. == Summary ==

If you only read the Wikimedia project websites, no more information is collected than is typically collected in server logs by web sites in general.

If you contribute to the Wikimedia projects, you are publishing every word you post publicly. If you write something, assume that it will be retained forever. This includes articles, user pages and talk pages. Some limited exceptions are described below.

Publishing on the wiki and public data
Simply visiting the web site does not expose your identity publicly (but see private logging below).

When you edit any page in the wiki, you are publishing a document. This is a public act, and you are identified publicly with that edit as its author.

Identification of an author
When you publish a page in the wiki, you may be logged in or not.

If you are logged in, you will be identified by your user name. This may be your real name if you so choose, or you may choose to publish under a pseudonym, whatever user name you selected when you created your account.

If you have not logged in, you will be identified by your network IP address. This is a series of four numbers which identifies the Internet address from which you are contacting the wiki. Depending on your connection, this number may be traceable only to a large Internet service provider, or specifically to your school, place of business, or home. It may be possible that the origin of this IP address could be used in conjunction with any interests you express implicitly or explicitly by editing articles to identify you even by private individuals.

It may be either difficult or easy for a motivated individual to connect your network IP address with your real-life identity. Therefore if you are very concerned about privacy, you may wish to log in and publish under a pseudonym.

When using a pseudonym, your IP address will not be available to the public except in cases of abuse, including vandalism of a wiki page by you or by another user with the same IP address. In all cases, your IP address will be stored on the wiki servers and can be seen by Wikimedia's server administrators and by users who have been granted "CheckUser" access. Your IP address, and its connection to any usernames that share it may be released under certain circumstances (see below).

If you use a company mail server from home or telecommute and use a DSL or cable Internet connection, it is likely to be very easy for your employer to identify your IP address and find all of your IP based Wikimedia project contributions. Using a user name is a better way of preserving your privacy in this situation. However, remember to log out or disconnect yourself after each session using a pseudonym on a shared computer, to avoid allowing others to use your identity.

Cookies
The wiki will set a temporary session cookie (PHPSESSID) whenever you visit the site. If you do not intend to ever log in, you may deny this cookie, but you cannot log in without it. It will be deleted when you close your browser session.

More cookies may be set when you log in, to avoid typing in your user name (or optionally password) on your next visit. These last up to 30 days. You may clear these cookies after use if you are using a public machine and don't wish to expose your username to future users of the machine. (If so, clear the browser cache as well.)

Passwords
Many aspects of the Wikimedia projects' community interactions depend on the reputation and respect that is built up through a history of valued contributions. User passwords are the only guarantee of the integrity of a user's edit history. All users are encouraged to select strong passwords and to never share them. No one shall knowingly expose the password of another user to public release either directly or indirectly.

Private logging
Every time you visit a web page, you send a lot of information to the web server. Most web servers routinely maintain access logs with a portion of this information, which can be used to get an overall picture of what pages are popular, what other sites link to this one, and what web browsers people are using. It is not the intention of the Wikimedia projects to use this information to keep track of legitimate users.

These logs are used to produce the site statistics pages; the raw log data is not made public, and is normally discarded after about two weeks.

Here's a sample of what's logged for one page view:

64.164.82.142 - - [21/Oct/2003:02:03:19 +0000]
"GET /wiki/draft_privacy_policy HTTP/1.1" 200 18084
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump"
"Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/85.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/85.5"

Log data may be examined by developers in the course of solving technical problems and in tracking down badly-behaved web spiders that overwhelm the site. IP addresses of users, derived either from those logs or from records in the database are frequently used to correlate usernames and network addresses of edits in investigating abuse of the wiki, including the suspected use of malicious "sockpuppets" (duplicate accounts), vandalism, harassment of other users, or disruption of the wiki.

Policy on release of data derived from page logs
It is the policy of Wikimedia that personally identifiable data collected in the server logs, or through records in the database via the CheckUser feature, may be released by the system administrators or users with CheckUser access, in the following situations:

# In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement
# With permission of the affected user
# To the chair of Wikimedia Foundation, his/her legal counsel, or his/her designee, when necessary for investigation of abuse complaints.
# Where the information pertains to page views generated by a spider or bot and its dissemination is necessary to illustrate or resolve technical issues.
# Where the user has been vandalising articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers
# Where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of the Wikimedia Foundation, its users or the public.

Wikimedia policy does not permit public distribution of such information under any circumstances, except as described above.

Sharing information with third parties
Except where otherwise specified, all text added to Wikimedia projects is available for reuse under the terms of the GFDL, except for Wikinews, where the text is available under a Creative Commons License.

Wikimedia will not sell or share private information, such as email addresses, with third parties, unless you agree to release this information, or it is required by law to release the information.

Security of information
The Wikimedia Foundation makes no guarantee against unauthorized access to any information you provide. This information may be available to anyone with access to the servers. A partial list of those people can be found in the developers list.

E-mail, mailing lists and IRC
E-mail
You may provide your e-mail address in your Preferences and enable other logged-in users to send email to you through the wiki. Your address will not be revealed to them unless you respond, or possibly if the email bounces. The email address may be used by the Wikimedia Foundation to communicate with users on a wider scale.

If you do not provide an email address, you will not be able to reset your password if you forget it. However, you may contact one of the Wikimedia server administrators to enter a new mail address in your preferences.

You can remove your email address from your preferences at any time to prevent it being used.

Mailing lists
If you subscribe to one of the project mailing lists, your address will be exposed to any other subscriber. The list archives of most of Wikimedia's mailing lists are public, and your address may find itself quoted in messages. The list archives are also archived by Gmane and other services. Mails are usually not deleted or modified, but it may be done in extreme cases.

Information email addresses
Some email addresses (see below) may forward mail to a team of volunteers trusted by the Foundation to use a ticket system such as OTRS to view them and answer them. Mail sent to the system is not publicly visible, but is visible to this group of Wikimedia volunteers. By sending a mail to one of these addresses, your address may become public within this group. The ticket system team may discuss the contents of your mail with other contributors in order to best answer your query.

Addresses that direct to the ticket system system include:
*info-de AT wikipedia DOT org
*info-en AT wikipedia DOT org
*info-es AT wikipedia DOT org
*info-fr AT wikipedia DOT org
*info-it AT wikipedia DOT org
*info-nl AT wikipedia DOT org
*info-pl AT wikipedia DOT org

Mail to board members' private addresses may also be forwarded to the OTRS team.

IRC
IRC channels are not officially part of Wikimedia proper. By participating in an IRC channel, your IP address may be exposed to other participants. Different channels have different policies on whether logs may be published.

User data
Data on users, such as the times at which they edited and the number of edits they have made are publicly available via "user contributions" lists, and in aggregated forms published by other users.

Removal of user accounts
Once created, user accounts will not be removed. It may be possible for a username to be changed (depending on the policies of your local wiki). The Wikimedia Foundation does not guarantee that a name will be changed on request.

Whether specific user information is deleted is dependant on the deletion policies of the project that contains the information.

Deletion of content
Removing text from Wikimedia projects does not permanently delete it. In normal articles, anyone can look at a previous version and see what was there. If an article is "deleted", any user with "administrator" access on the wiki, meaning almost anyone trusted not to abuse the deletion capability, can see what was deleted. Information can be permanently deleted by those people with access to the servers, but there is no guarantee this will happen except in response to legal action.
Understanding resolutions
*Approve means the board member voted and this vote was YES.
*Oppose means the board member voted and this vote was NO.
*Abstain means the board member voted and this vote was "no opinion". Abstain counts as a vote.
*Missing means the board member was not present at the board meeting, or did not come to vote on the wiki page". Missing counts as a vote.
*Recuse means the board member was present, but did not vote because of a declared conflict-of-interest. A recusal does not count as a vote.

As of June 2008, the total number of voters is 8. When no board members recuse themselves, a resolution passes with 5 YES votes. When there is a recusal, a resolution passes with 4 YES votes, because the number of voting members is reduced to 7.

Hi Angela. I went through the whole list of pages on this wiki and built an User:Jd/Inventory. By the way, I'm not an admin here so I can't do much of the work I planned on this page. I would like to know if Anthere, you and Michael Snow (the bureaucrats here) would agree to make me admin here so I can maintain the wiki (templates, deletion, bla bla bla and all the nitty-gritty details). Meta needs spring-cleaning too, but it's far more difficult I guess. Lastly, I don't know how to get feedback on the inventory. Should I contact several members, here and/or on meta, or is there an appropriate mailing-list (wikipedia-l is not a good choice I guess).
You reverted my edit here and didn't even use an edit summary to explain to me why. Can you elaborate here? The page is outdated and, per the agreement of Transcom, we are going to replace all pages that have not been updated since before August 2007 with update needed and just add update needed to the top of the page and hope someone will update it if it was updated after August 2007. Cbrown1023 talk 20:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
:Lol. I did not "revert" you. I thought I was updating the page, after Teofilo pointed out that he had translated these resolutions, and was asking for additional checks. I did not check the history page, so I had no idea I was reverting you.
::Ahh, sorry, I should've assumed better faith. :-)
:I find the idea of removing *everything* when pages are not updated a bit strange (and rather dismissive of the work done by previous translators).
::The thinking was that pages get so outdated that they are no longer useful (and may end up giving mis-information). For examples, see the nl/Nederlands and ro/Română translations of the Home page.
:First, readers do not find any version of french, even though over a year of resolutions were already translated, so we fail as a service. Second, translators have little idea that a lot of the job has already been done, so could feel that the amount of work to provide is huge.
::Hmm, good point. However, Resolutions is a strange case because it is one of the few pages that we do not "officially" ask for translation. Other pages are linked to the workspace on Meta-Wiki where the translations can be prepared and where (most of the time) the old translation is to expand.
:It is not as if some information was no more valid (and in this case, it indeed is better removed), but simply some information is missing (which we could very well indicate at the top of the page.
::You are correct for the Résolutions page.
:Would we blank entirely a wikipedia article because it is not finished ? What were the arguments to decide to remove all unfinished things ? Also, is there an effort to find some editors to try to help finishing the translations till summer 07 ? Anthere 21:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
::We had a multi-month house-cleaning process outlined and announced on the Translators' mailing list (translators-l), you can see the initial announcement here and the most recent update here.
There should be a link to the press release on the Home page. Yann 11:46, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I've increased the width the "about" part of the page occupies to 60% as it contains the most important content, and the amount "below the fold" needed to be reduced. I've also explained the Board on the main page - before that, there was just a single small link to the board page - easily missed. This also provides explanation for the list of board meetings that was already there!

The text for the board part is an abridged part of Board of trustees - the translations should already exist.

I've also moved the Quarto link to below the Latest news section. It was completely out of place in the "About the..." section, and, being the newsletter, belongs rather more by the news section. Dan100 17:45, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
The Wikimedia Foundation Inc. is the parent organization of various free-content projects, most notably Wikipedia, the award-winning online encyclopedia.

What is the mission of the Foundation ?
The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free content license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.

In collaboration with a network of chapters, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission. The Foundation will make and keep useful information from its projects available on the Internet free of charge, in perpetuity.

See also our mission statement.

Are you a charity?
Wikimedia is a non-profit charitable corporation organized under the laws of Florida, USA. Fully audited, The Wikimedia Foundation is now listed as a charitable organization at Guidestar and
its partner sites. The Wikimedia Foundation has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the United States.

The existence of the Wikimedia Foundation was officially announced by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales on June 20, 2003. The bylaws of Wikimedia Foundation Inc. are available online.

Which projects do you support?
WMF supports Wikipedia, the famous online encyclopedia, which was among the 10 most visited websites in the world in mid-2007. From the founding of Wikipedia in January 2001, and the incorporation of the Wikimedia Foundation in June 2003, our growth has been staggering. The English-language Wikipedia, our first project, has expanded from 135,000 articles at the time of incorporation to 1.8 million articles today. Wikipedias in 8 other languages boast over 250,000 articles of their own.

However, the Foundation also operates several projects beside Wikipedia, such as Wikimedia Commons, the repository of free images and other media, which surpassed 1 million images in November 2006. Wiktionary, the free dictionary, has 8 dictionaries with more than 50,000 entries, three of which have more than 200,000 definitions. Wikisource, an original source repository, is nearing 150,000 pages of content. Wikiquote (quotations), Wikibooks (collaboratively written books), Wikinews (citizen journalism), and Wikiversity (curriculum development) all continue to grow along the same trend line.

Overall, our projects have more than 7.8 million pages, 2.2 million images, and 5 million registered accounts.

Wikitravel, Omegawiki and Wikia are separate wikis which are not managed by the Wikimedia Foundation.

More information may be found at our projects. For example, here is a report on the state of Wikisource.

How is the Foundation run?
The Wikimedia Board of Trustees manages the nonprofit organization and supervises the solicitation and disposition of donations. The Board of Trustees is the ultimate corporate authority in the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (article IV, sec. 1 of the Wikimedia Foundation bylaws). The Board has the power to direct the activities of the foundation.

This site includes a complete list of notes from Board meetings till the end of 2005.

In 2006, we switched to a dual system, featuring both meeting minutes (usually not published), and resolutions. We also set up a collection of committees and hired our first Executive Director, Brad Patrick, in June 2006. Most of the interaction between board members, staff, committee members, developers and community happens online, on our wikis, on mailing lists, and through electronic chat (IRC). We do, however, have face to face opportunities, during Wikimania (our annual conference), during board retreats or real life board meetings.

We have only one office, located in San Francisco, California (USA), where several of our employees are working. All other board members and staff work remotely. The staff is eleven people (as of mid-2007); this does not include the many volunteers, from board members to proofreaders.

At the end of 2006, major changes in the organization took place, including four new board members in three months, change of the chair of the Foundation, setup of an advisory board, and revised bylaws.
Who are the members of Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees?
In January 2004, Jimmy Wales appointed Tim Shell and Michael Davis to the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation and later made a call for candidates for community representatives . In June 2004, an election was held for two user representative Board members. Following one month of campaigning and two weeks of online voting, Angela Beesley and Florence Nibart-Devouard were elected to join the board. They were reelected the following year in July 2005.

In July 2006, Angela Beesley announced her resignation and in September 2006, Erik Möller was elected as her replacement. In October 2006, Florence Devouard became the new chair. In December 2006, the Wikimedia Foundation appointed two new board members, Kat Walsh and Oscar van Dillen. Tim Shell chose to resign from the board and was replaced by Jan-Bart de Vreede, who was appointed vice-chair. In July 2007, an election was held for the expiring terms of Möller, Walsh, and van Dillen. Möller and Walsh both kept their seats, and van Dillen was replaced with Frieda Brioschi. End of 2007, Erik Moeller and Michael Davis left the board, and February 2008, Michael Snow and Domas Mituzas were appointed .

As of February 2008, the list of board members is

* Frieda Brioschi
* Florence Devouard (chair)
* Domas Mituzas
* Michael Snow
* Jan-Bart de Vreede (vice chair)
* Jimmy Wales
* Kat Walsh

Biographies and terms of current board members may be found at Board.

How does the Foundation serve its mission?
First, the Wikimedia Foundation owns the Wikimedia servers along with the domain names and trademarks of all Wikimedia projects and the MediaWiki software. It generally supports all the costs of having the projects up and in working order. Contributors retain the copyright to their own content but must release it under a free license, most commonly the GNU Free Documentation License, allowing anyone to continue to use it for any purpose, in perpetuity. Through this principle of free content, we ensure that our work will never be lost to humankind.

The Foundation also plays an important innovative part in further developing the projects, connecting people, promoting collaboration with other parties, and so on. In particular, each of our projects has unique technological requirements, which are met by our small but efficient team of software developers. The highest priority in 2007 will be a renewed focus on quality assurance. This will include mechanisms to identify trusted versions of content such as Wikipedia articles.

Ensuring success in all endeavors of the Foundation will make it necessary to collaborate with organizations and companies around the planet. Our financial planning includes professional staff who will pursue such strategic partnerships, as well as coordinate our growing network of chapter organizations in various countries.

How is the revenue spent?
The majority of WMF expenditures support our programs. Foremost are our expenses for the hardware and bandwidth that keep our websites up and running.

The single greatest expenditure for WMF is hardware, followed by hosting and bandwidth costs. The WMF has seen its inventory of computer hardware increase steadily to meet demand. Here is a frequently updated status of this hardware: Wikimedia hardware status.

The main reason for the increase is our growth in traffic. At the end of the year 2006, Comscore listed "Wikipedia Sites" as the number six site in the world, measured by unique visitors (*). Wikipedia, our flagship website, received about 285,000 page views per minute. The WMF is concerned about the capitalization and operational commitments necessary to keep these systems running reliably. These costs alone will exceed $2.5 million in the year 2007.

(*) Excludes traffic from mobile phones, PDAs, and public computers such as Internet cafes.

Domain registration and trademarks are another part of Wikimedia's expenditures. The Foundation already owns some of its active and secondary/tangentially-related domain names, while others are still free or already owned.

Due to the increase in office staff, administrative costs increased. Overall, however, the allocation of expenses for fundraising is low, due to WMF's reliance on online donations for the majority of its revenue. WMF does not engage in "direct mail" advertising campaigns. Given WMF's presence online, it makes sense to communicate and ask for donations in the same virtual space. To date, it has been effective.

Costs have been kept low in the past three years, in particular because the largest majority of people helping are volunteers.

See also: Planned Spending Distribution 2007-2008

Where does the money come from?
As of July 2007, Wikimedia is funded primarily through private donations, but also through several grants and gifts of servers and hosting (see benefactors).

The WMF receives donations from more than 50 countries around the world. Most of the donations to WMF come from English-speaking countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia). Over half of these donations are anonymous. Though individual donations are relatively small, their sheer numbers have ensured our success.

The Wikimedia Foundation aims to increase revenue by finding alternative means of support, including grants and sponsorship as well as selling WikiReaders (textbook or PDF versions of articles from Wikipedia). There has also been discussion of selling a print version of a significant portion of Wikipedia, such as a "Wikipedia 1.0" project.

We are presently not using advertising as a source of revenue.

The Wikimedia Foundation has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the United States. Donations made from other nations may also be tax deductible. See deductibility of donations for details. Please see our fundraising page for details of making donations via PayPal, MoneyBookers or by postal mail. For all other types of donation, please contact Sue Gardner at sgardner at wikimedia.org.

Do you have audited financial statements?
Our financial statements have been audited for fiscal years 2004, 2005 and 2006 by Gregory Sharer & Stuart and are compliant with generally accepted accounting principles.

What is Wikia? Is it part of Wikipedia? Is it one of the Wikimedia Foundation projects?
The Wikimedia Foundation is a registered not-for profit dedicated to the development and promotion of free content. In 2004, Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley founded Wikia, Inc. with the idea of using the same model as the Wikimedia projects to create a vast collection of wikis devoted to content that does not fit the model of any Wikimedia project. Among the initial members of Wikia were Jimmy Wales, Angela Beesley, and Michael Davis, who at the time were three board members of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikia is, however, a completely separate company.

In some ways Wikia sites are similar to Wikipedia: both offer free content which anyone can edit. In others ways they are different: Wikia tends to have more specialized content, and features fan guides, travel information, how-to wikis, and Uncyclopedia, a popular parody of Wikipedia. Unlike Wikipedia, which is funded by donations, Wikia is funded by investors and by advertising.

Wikimedia and Wikia have a healthy relationship, and people from one often contribute to the other. They are, however, separate companies with different business models.

See Wikia, Inc is not the commercial counterpart to Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation for further details on the relationships between Wikia and Wikimedia.

What is Wikimania? Is it a Wikimedia project?
Wikimania is an annual conference organized by Wikimedia volunteers across the world. While not technically a Wikimedia project, the Foundation sponsors and assists the conference team in promotion, hosting, and financial issues. See Wikimania for more details about this conference.
* On March 24, 2008, Vinod and Neeru Khosla announced a $500,000 donation to the Wikimedia Foundation, calling Wikipedia "a valuable global education resource." (Press release)

* Special thanks to a friend of the Wikimedia Foundation, who has made a matching donation of $286,000 in stocks, and who has chosen to remain anonymous. (December 2006)
