... a passionate software engineer who wants the challenge of building out the next set of mobile features for Wikipedia and all of its sister sites. You love writing open source software at a large scale, and you want to help make the mobile ecosystem more open by doing your part.

Wikimedia is building a new mobile team to respond to the large strategic need for not only providing all Wikimedia content through mobile but also allowing for participation through mobile devices. In this role you will be able to develop new features for Wikipedia to grow on millions of new devices. These new features will play a key role in expanding the reach and participation of both existing and new Wikipedia users world wide.

JOB PURPOSE

We want to make the mobile experience on Wikipedia one that people keep coming back to. We have lots of ideas on how to do that and we want to hear yours, too. This position will be at the forefront of new feature development to make that happen. You'll have the ability to develop new ways to collaborate and to present Wikipedia content to the whole world. And that's not just the English speaking part of the world. This job includes validating the experience so that Indic, Arabic, and other languages have the same great fit and experience.

JOB SUMMARY

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop new features and enhance existing features for Wikimedia sites.
  • Continually assess development on the mobile platform, creating more efficient practices and exploring new solutions as the technology evolves.
  • Support existing mobile features and new developments.
  • Work within a small and agile mobile focused team.
  • Collaborate with UX researchers and Interaction designers to implement innovative UI components and new interaction paradigms.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Substantial experience developing web applications in PHP and new technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of HTML5 mobile web standards for both feature and smart phones.
  • Experience with iOS, Android, Symbian, WebOS sdks a huge plus.
  • You must be comfortable in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment.
  • Understanding of free culture / free software / open source is a plus.
  • The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural contexts.
  • Experience with use of wiki technology is a major plus.
  • Experience with mobile UX and UI design and development is a major plus.
  • Experience living or working outside of your home country is a major plus.
  • Experience in mentoring and working with community of volunteer developers is a major plus.
