JOB TITLE

User Interface Designer [CLOSED]

JOB PURPOSE

The core responsibilities of this position include working with staff and community members to collaboratively design, prototype and test user interfaces for new and existing components of software developed and maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation. UI Designers are assigned to work with specific Feature teams on an as-needed basis, thus documenting interaction assumptions is critical for passing on of knowledge. The ideal candidate will have experience working in collaborative short and frequent design and development iterations, as well as designing in an open and transparent manner.

JOB SUMMARY

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work with Feature teams to understand requirements for both new and existing features
  • Understand short-term and far-reaching implications of design decisions
  • Develop interaction and visual designs for Features development
  • Partner with both front end and back end development teams to design, develop & test software.
  • Work closely with Feature team to align priorities
  • Work with Product Management staff to assess impact of a given design
  • Design and execute UI Testing of over-all design
  • Advocate for usability point of view in Feature development
  • Account for Community feedback in design iterations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years experience in feature design and implementation
  • 5+ years experience in graphic, usability, and interaction design for web sites
  • 5+ years experience in web-based front-end development (HTML, CSS, Javascript, XML, etc.)
  • 5+ years experience using development tools, issue trackers, and version control systems
  • 2+ years experience with Linux and other UNIX-likes, (systems administration experience preferable)
  • Experience working with international communities and understanding issues surrounding localization
  • Experience working collaboratively and in public with a large and diverse group of stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-starter, willing and able to take responsibility as needed
  • Able to easily transition between being task-oriented (focused) and goal-oriented (big picture)
  • Understanding of free culture / free software /open source is a plus.
  • Experience working with volunteers online is a major plus.
  • Experience with use of wiki technology is a major plus.
  • Must be impact-oriented and mission-driven.
  • Active participation as a Wikimedia volunteer would be an asset, though not a prerequisite.
  • The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural contexts.
