This statement describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants.

Please note that this survey is powered by Google Forms, which means Google’s use of your information is governed by their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Purpose of Survey

We appreciate your participation! This survey will allow us to better understand Checkusers’ experiences when detecting sockpuppets, and will ultimately help us develop better tools.

What Information We Collect

This survey collects the responses you provide to the questions asked. There are two types of answers: defined responses, and free-form responses. If you wish to be contacted with follow-up questions, you may provide your email address at the end of the survey.

Information Sharing and Disclosure

Anonymous summaries of responses may be shared publicly at meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Sockpuppet_detection_in_Wikimedia_projects and in subsequent reports and presentation materials. We strongly suggest that you do not provide your real name, email address, or other personal information. Please note that the final question is an exception. There, you may provide an email address for follow-up questions. Collected email addresses will not be publicly shared.

Raw data will be shared with the Wikimedia staff who need to process this information, and with a team of university researchers who are joining us on this project, all of whom are subject to non-disclosure obligations, with the exception of the circumstances described below.

We may disclose any collected information when required by law, when we have your permission, when needed to protect our rights, privacy, safety, users, or the general public, and when necessary to enforce our Terms of Use or any other Wikimedia policy.

Important Information

Wikimedia is a global organization committed to promoting free and open knowledge. By submitting your response, you agree to the transfer, storage, and use of the collected information to the United States and other places as may be necessary to carry out the purposes and objectives discussed above. You also consent to the transfer of information from the U.S. to other countries, which may have different or less stringent data protection laws than your country, in order to carry out the aforementioned purposes and objectives.

Wikimedia understands the importance of user privacy. For this reason, we work to protect our users from the unauthorized disclosure or use of information we maintain. Information collected in this survey will be anonymized, aggregated, or deleted within 90 days. See our data retention guidelines for more information.
