William Hahn
Legal Intern, Wikimedia Foundation

About me

I am here with the Foundation as a summer legal intern, on summer break from the University of Minnesota Law School. I graduated from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and then spent several years working at KCTS9 in Seattle, former home of Bill Nye the Science Guy.

When not working, I enjoy running, biking, and fencing. Right now I'm mostly spending my free time exploring San Francisco or getting FaceTime with my wife back in Minneapolis.

I am a long time Wikipedia user, though only occasional editor. I fully intend on becoming a bigger part of the community during and following this internship. Though I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to the Wikimedia Foundation, I consider my greatest achievement to be my upcoming second wedding anniversary.

My work

As a Legal Intern, I perform legal research and writing to support the Legal and Community Advocacy Department. As a part of that work, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to interact with the community in the LCA category on the Meta-Wiki.

For legal ethical reasons I (as well as the rest of the legal team) can only represent the Wikimedia Foundation and cannot be the attorney for the community or chapters, though the legal team often provides strong support to the community in many ways consistent with the the Foundation goals. This is doubly true for me as a current law student who hasn't passed the bar. You can read more about our initiatives here and here.

Disclaimer:
Although I work for the Wikimedia Foundation, contributions under this account do not necessarily represent the actions or views of the Foundation unless expressly stated otherwise. For example, edits to articles or uploads of other media are done in my individual, personal capacity unless otherwise stated. The legal team can only represent the Wikimedia Foundation on legal matters, so we are unable to give legal advice to others, including community members, editors, or contributors. Communications with members of the legal team are not consultations and do not create any confidential relationship.
