Across the world — in countries like India, Kenya, Bangladesh and Brazil — millions and millions of people are coming online for the first time. Not on a computer, but on their phones.
There’s a world of knowledge at their fingertips... but data costs can make it tough to access.
I work at the Wikimedia Foundation. We’re a small, nonprofit organization, with just about 150 employees. We believe knowledge should be free. So we’re working to develop a solution: Wikipedia Zero. The goal of Wikipedia Zero is to remove barriers to access, making it cheaper and easier for people all over the world to read Wikipedia on their phones.
As key to this initiative, we’re partnering with mobile carriers around the world to deliver Wikipedia at zero cost, with no data fees. I help establish these partnerships.
Two years ago, the Wikipedia community — editors and supporters like you — created a strategic plan to guide the Wikimedia Foundation’s work. You gave us a challenge: reach a billion people by 2015.
We’re halfway there, but we still have a long way to go. And Wikipedia Zero can help us reach our goal.
Often when I talk about Wikipedia, people get excited. They still remember the first time they discovered Wikipedia, and all the incredible things they’ve learned since. You probably remember it too: that feeling of awe and wonder when you realized you could satisfy your curiosity on any topic, at any time.
Because of your efforts, more people will get to share that feeling. Whether you donate a few dollars, make a few edits, or volunteer in other ways, your support for Wikipedia helps us accomplish projects like Wikipedia Zero.
Please note: this page has been proposed for deletion. It has had most of its page contents banished to the page history and its author (and other significant contributors) have been notified of its impending deletion. Without objection, this page will be deleted after November 20, 2013.
Meet some of the editors of Wikipedia.
We would like to introduce you to some of the dedicated volunteers who you empower when you donate. It is our hope that after you read or hear a few of their stories, you'll want to join them in sharing your knowledge with the world by editing Wikipedia.
You can edit Wikipedia!
- Create and improve articles. Wikipedia is still missing articles on many topics. Thousands of articles need expanding, copy editing and additional references.
- Add photos and video. You can upload freely licensed images and other media.
- Become a part of the Wikipedia community. Logging in means all your contributions are attributed to your username, and lets you connect with other Wikipedia contributors.
It's free thanks to our donors
Wikipedia will never run ads. We're powered by small donations from our readers.
