Thank You/Netha Hussain
I’ve always longed to help people. Even as a small child, I knew I wanted to alleviate pain and relieve suffering. I decided that one day, I would become a doctor.
Today, as a third year student in medical college, I’m close to making that dream come true.
Just a few years ago, there were only a few encyclopedias in my mother tongue, Malayalam. Medical textbooks were rare and expensive. I depended on these books, but I could only use them at the library. They cost too much to buy.
Then I discovered Wikipedia. It was so very powerful — and it made me want to contribute something of my own.
I started editing Wikipedia every day. In school, we studied subjects like microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and forensic medicine. After class, I'd go straight to Wikipedia. I'd review the information related to the day's lecture, and add a few more facts and sources.
It was a lot of work, and I always went to bed tired, but it was worth it.
Being a doctor is more than curing illness and relieving symptoms. It’s also about communication: empowering patients with the knowledge to manage their own health and advocate for themselves.
Everybody reads Wikipedia. If they want to learn something, they turn to Wikipedia first. I know I’ve helped a little — maybe even a lot. And that’s the greatest feeling I know.
