Wikimedia Foundation joins as member of Cloud Native Computing Foundation

As a CNCF member, the Wikimedia Foundation will help shape and influence dialogue around the future of open source technologies

(San Francisco, California) 23 October 2017 — Today, the Wikimedia Foundation has joined as a member organization of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), the governance body for a suite of cloud-native open source technologies.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), a sub-foundation of the Linux Foundation, hosts critical components of open source software stacks — among them Kubernetes and Prometheus — that the Wikimedia Foundation currently uses in its cloud services and production networks. Cloud native computing uses an open source software stack to deploy applications as microservices, packaging each part into its own container, and dynamically orchestrating those containers to optimize resource utilization.

As an end user member of the CNCF, the Wikimedia Foundation will have the opportunity to participate and influence dialogue about the future of these technologies alongside other leaders in open source. This will include advising the CNCF Governing Board and Technical Oversight Committee members on key challenges, emerging use cases and areas of opportunity and new growth for cloud native technologies. The Wikimedia Foundation will also gain access to conferences and events held worldwide to improve the software.

“Being able to provide input in the planning process for these technologies is beneficial for our long-term use of the software,” said Bryan Davis, Engineering Manager of Wikimedia Cloud Services. “It also shows that the Foundation has a level of commitment and involvement with the FLOSS software world beyond our own projects.”

"Supporting the technology needs of the Wikimedia movement is the core work of the Technology department of the Wikimedia Foundation,” said Wikimedia Foundation Chief Technology Officer, Victoria Coleman. “We are constantly examining and evolving our core offerings to improve the reliability, performance, and ease of use of our products and platforms. Interacting with peer organizations through an aligned group like the CNCF allows us to both share what we have learned with others and to learn new things ourselves."

About Cloud Native Computing Foundation

Cloud native computing uses an open source software stack to deploy applications as microservices, packaging each part into its own container, and dynamically orchestrating those containers to optimize resource utilization. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) hosts critical components of those software stacks including Kubernetes, Fluentd, linkerd, Prometheus, OpenTracing, gRPC, CoreDNS, containerd, rkt and CNI. CNCF serves as the neutral home for collaboration and brings together the industry’s top developers, end users and vendors – including the six largest public cloud providers and many of the leading private cloud companies. CNCF is part of The Linux Foundation, a nonprofit organization. For more information about CNCF, please visit: https://cncf.io/.
