2006年5月現在、ウィキペディアは世界で最も利用されるサイト20の内のひとつとなっていました（出典：Alexa Internet analysis of Wikipedia traffic）。フロリダ、アムステルダム、パリに設置されているウィキメディアのサーバーは、毎日そのピーク時には毎秒1万4,000リクエスト—およそ毎秒4,300ページ—を受け、転送量は200Mbpsにもなります。
