Deductibility of donations
The Wikimedia Foundation Inc., a Florida not-for-profit corporation, is registered as a charitable organization with the State of Florida's Division of Consumer Services, a division of the State of Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and may lawfully solicit donations under Florida law. However, Wikimedia is still in the process of obtaining official tax exempt status from the United States Internal Revenue Service. We are hoping to have an answer from the IRS before mid-February 2005. As it is a new organization (corporate status granted: June 20, 2003), you may not deduct donations from your federally-taxable income until the IRS determines Wikimedia is tax exempt. If you make a donation, you will receive the paperwork needed to claim it as a tax deduction once tax exempt status is granted; please contact a tax professional for the details of deducting such a donation.
Donations from individuals who are not U.S. residents or nationals may not be tax-deductible — questions about such donations should be directed to a tax professional. Donors living outside the United States should determine whether there is a tax treaty or other law that would allow them to deduct a donation to Wikimedia from their income.
