The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is an international non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and to providing the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public free of charge. Wikimedia relies on public donations to meet its goal of providing free knowledge to every person in the world.


The Wikimedia Foundation is the parent organization of some of the largest collaboratively-edited reference projects in the world, including Wikipedia, one of the 500 most visited websites in the world. Other online projects include Wiktionary, a multilingual dictionary; Wikibooks, a collection of free content textbooks; Wikiquote, a repository of famous quotes; and Wikisource, a repository for primary source material.

Latest news

  • October 2004: French local chapter was founded.
  • September 2004: inaugural Edition of Quarto, our newsletter.
  • August 2004: Project members: Are you interested in being part of the Wikimedia Press Team?
  • July 2004: Membership plans are being finalised for the launch of Foundation membership.
  • Development: The latest official position appointed by the Board of Trustees was that of Developer Liaison. This title went to Tim Starling who will be the first point of contact between the directors and the development team.
