Tous les projets principaux de la Fondation Wikimédia sont developpés de manière collaborative par leurs utilisateurs. Dans cette optique ces projets sont basés sur l'utilisation d'un logiciel de wiki appellé [[#MediaWiki|MediaWiki]]. Le contenu mis en ligne dans le cadre de ces projets est rendu ''libre'', en vertu de la [[:fr:GFDL|Licence de documentation libre GNU]] : ceci veut dire que le contenu peut être librement réutilisé, modifié, et redistribué, à condition de respecter les termes de la licence. Le projet a démarré en janvier 2001 et a atteint le million d'articles répartis sur 140 langues. Les langues dans lesquelles figurent le plus d'articles sont l'anglais, suivi de l'allemand, du japonais et du français. |
