Sidebar

Hi Anthere, if you want to see a test of the new sidebar idea, go to User:Anthere/monobook.css and add the following:

#p-nav      { position:absolute; top:150px; width:146px;  z-index:1;}
#p-search   { position:absolute; top:380px;}
#p-tb       { position:absolute; top:450px;}

And then see User:Angela/Sandbox/Home and User:Angela/Sandbox/Accueil. They will have different sidebars. The above could be put in the MediaWiki:Monobook.css so it applied to everyone.

To put a French sidebar on a page, you just need to add a template {{User:Angela/Sandbox/Home/Fr}}. If you don't add it, you will see the English sidebar.

If you like, you can put the sidebar of your choice in your User:Anthere/monobook.js page so you always see the French sidebar, even on English pages. This would only work for logged in users though. Everyone else would get a sidebar that matches the language of the page. See User:Angela/monobook.js for example. I'm currently getting the French sidebar on every page. It's not quite working in IE yet. For some reason, the French menu appears behind the English one and changing the z-index has no effect, although it worked in Firefox. :( Also, on very short pages, the bar at the bottom with the GFDL logo appears behind the sidebar rather than staying at the bottom, so I need to fix that before it goes live. Another problem I forgot about is that it occasionally breaks for no good reason and shows only a toolbar with no page. This happens maybe once every few hundred page views, so it's quite rare, but still maybe too much of a bug to put it live? Angela 03:11, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

it unfortunately happens more often than that. I was waiting to see if I could distinguish a pattern. But nope. Do you have an idea what is wrong ? I think it is too frequent to go live. Idea ? Anthere

I was basing that figure on how much it used to happen to me on en when I used a similar thing. Perhaps it's got worse since then. I really don't know what causes it, but I think JavaScript is not a permanent solution to this. Angela 20:46, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I think Download MediaWiki should be part of the Our projects page, not in the sidebar by itself. I also think sponsors should be made more prominent by being in the sidebar to encourage further donations. What do you think? Angela 21:51, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi ant. There's a major problem with sidebar. If you change skins, some of links stop working and others disappear altogether.

Yes that's fine because the French page will have a link to the English one. I just didn't want people thinking it had disappeared altogether. If you delete the page, they have no way of finding the English version unless they realise it is in the sidebar. Angela 06:15, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

This is because the messages used changed with the latest version of MediaWiki and the French version of Special:Allmessages have not been edited since then. The menu looks fine in English due tot he changes Brion made. These need to be applied to the French interface, so where Brion has changed MediaWiki:Sitesupport-url, you need to edit MediaWiki:Sitesupport-url/fr to be the same (but in French).
