The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is an international non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and to providing the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public free of charge. Wikimedia relies on public donations to meet its goal of providing free knowledge to every person in the world.

The Wikimedia sites include Wikipedia, one of the top 500 most visited websites in the world tracked by Alexa.com, and numerous other projects in many languages. The primary use of our funds is to purchase the computer equipment needed to support these activities.

Latest news
- August 2004: Project members: Are you interested in being part of the Wikimedia Press Team?
- July 2004: Membership plans are being finalised for the launch of Foundation membership.
- Development: The latest official position appointed by the Board of Trustees was that of Developer Liaison. This title went to Tim Starling who will be the first point of contact between the directors and the development team.
Mission statement
The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to the development and maintenance of free, open-content, online encyclopedias, collections of quotations, textbooks and other collections of documents, information, and other informational databases in all the languages of the world. This content will be distributed free of charge to the public under an open-content license such as the GNU Free Documentation License written by the Free Software Foundation Inc., or a similar licensing scheme.
The goals of the foundation are to encourage the further growth and development of open content, social sofware and wiki-based projects, and to provide the full contents of those projects to the public free of charge.
