Wikimedia Foundation continues to grow at an astonishing rate. Its board faces a organizational and financial challenge to maintain Wikipedia a top website on the planet, to also supports the various needs of the other projects, to meet with the ever-increasing demand for the online educational content created by the community of editors and contributors, and to succeed in its goal to make the gift of knowledge to the largest number of people on Earth. |

2006 was very much a transitional year, during which we first created the committees (january 2006). In june 2006, the Wikimedia Foundation hired Brad Patrick as general counsel and interim executive director, where he would oversee its staff and operations and lead the search for a permanent executive director. |

We wish to engage board members, staff, editors, committee members, developers, chapter members, to help create not only content, but also to help create a sustainable infrastructure for our projects. Year 2007 will start with a great fundraiser, which will include the opportunity to have donations made to the Foundation matched by generous individuals and companies who support our efforts. With our audit complete, Wikimedia Foundation is now listed as a charitable organization at Guidestar (www.guidestar.org) and its partner sites, which will extend our visibility in the not-for-profit community. |

ウィキメディア財団 (Wikimedia Foundation Inc.) は、多くの賞を受賞したオンライン百科事典ウィキペディアを含む、世界規模で行われている複数の資料共同編集プロジェクトを統括する団体です。ウィキペディア以外にも多くのオンラインプロジェクト活動を行っています。
ウィキメディア財団は米国フロリダ州法下の非営利団体です。財団の設立は、2003年6月20日に、ウィキペディアの創設者ジンボ・ウェールズにより公式に発表されました。2004年1月、ウェールズはティム・シェルとマイケル・デイヴィスをウィキメディア財団の理事に任命しました。2004年6月、2人のユーザー代表を理事に選出する選挙が行われました。1月の選挙運動期間と2週間のオンラインの投票により、アンジェラ・ビーズリーとフロランス・ニバル＝ドゥヴアールが理事会のメンバーとして選出されました。
財団の目的
ウィキによるプロジェクトでのフリー・コンテント資源の開発と保守、およびプロジェクトで開発した全コンテンツを公衆に無料で提供すること、これが財団の目的です。すでに開発されている多言語総合百科事典『ウィキペディア』の運営に加え、以下のようなプロジェクトの運営を行っています。
- 多言語の辞書およびシソーラスである『ウィクショナリー』
- 引用句、名言集辞典『ウィキクォート』
- 自主学習補助のためのフリー教科書を作成する『ウィキブックス』
- 全てのプロジェクトで使用できる一次リソースの文書庫『ウィキソース』
- ウィキソースの画像、メディアファイル版ともいえる『ウィキメディアコモンズ』
- 地球上全ての生物分類情報を収集する『ウィキスピーシーズ』
- フリーな教育共同体を目指す『ウィキバーシティ』
かつて財団では2001年9月11日の同時多発テロを追憶するためのプロジェクトも運営していました。これらすべてのプロジェクトは MediaWiki と呼ばれるウィキエンジンを用いています。また、現在は休眠中のヌーペディア・プロジェクト（ウィキではありませんが、オープンコンテントです）の運営も行っています。
ウィキメディア財団はウィキメディアのサーバ、ウィキメディア・プロジェクトすべてののドメイン名とプロジェクト名の商標、また MediaWiki の商標を所有しています。投稿者は自分の投稿の著作権を保有しており、全プロジェクトで使われるGNU FDL ライセンスがコンテンツの利用が永続的にフリーであることを保障しています。
各ウィキメディア・プロジェクトの絶え間ない成長は、寄付によって支えられてきました。ウィキメディア財団は、助成金や援助を含め、他の手段によって収入を増加させることを目指しています。
ウィキメディアという名前は「ウィキ」と「マルチメディア」からの造語です。

理事会
ウィキメディア財団理事会は非営利で運営され、非営利の寄付の譲渡と勧誘を監督します。理事会はウィキメディア財団における最高議決機関です（第4条1節）。理事会は財団の活動を指導する権限を持ちます。また会員の会費、会員規則、会員資格の停止を定める権限を持ちます（第3条）。また財団の会則を修正する権限を持ちます（第6条）。
収入
2004年7月現在、ウィキペディアは個人の寄付からのみ運営基金を調達しています。
これまでに他の財源を見つけるための議論が何度か行われてきました。助成金の獲得や、ウィキリーダーの販売による収入確保が提案されました。現在のところ、財団はウィキメディアのプロジェクト全体を広告なしで運営しつづけることを希望しています。またウィキペディア 1.0 プロジェクトのように、印刷したウィキペディアの販売も検討されました。結果、2004年中に会員システムが導入される見通しです。

2005年1月にフランスで3つの Squid サーバが立ち上げられました。設置場所及び通信帯域は寄付によるものです。
現在、財団は、数名のスタッフを雇用しています。
