All major projects of the Wikimedia Foundation are collaboratively developed by its users. For this purpose these projects are using a wiki software called MediaWiki. The content is free under the GNU Free Documentation License, meaning that it may be freely used, freely edited, freely copied and freely redistributed subject to the restrictions of that license. See also our link to all projects.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a multilingual project to build free encyclopedias in all languages of the world. The project startet in January 2001 and has reached 1.000.000 articles in about 140 languages. The largest Wikipedia is in English language, followed by German, Japanese and French.


Wiktionary

Wiktionary is a multilingual project to create open content dictionaries and thesauruses in every language. The project started in December 2002 and now in 146 languages. The largest Wiktionary is in English language, followed by Polish, Dutch, Swedish and French.


Wikiquote

Wikiquote is a multilingual project to build free- and open-content quotations. The project started in 2004 in English and there are currently about 2,300 articles in 15 languages. The largest Wikiquote in English with over 1500 articles, followed by German, French and Polish.


Wikibooks

Wikibooks is a multilingual project to build a collection of free and open content e-book resources aimed specifically toward students, such as textbooks, mauals and annotated public domain books. It aims to help both (self-)instruction of students and teachers in highschools and universities. It started in July, 2003 and has currently about 5,000 modules in 250 books in six languages. The largest Wikibooks is in English language.

A Wikibooks portal named Wikiversity is now planned.


Wikisource

Wikisource is a multilingual project to build a collection of primary texts, distributed as free and open content. It serves other sister projects of Wikimedia as a useful archive of classics, laws, and other free texts. It started in November, 2003. Under a domain wikisource.org its all contents are distributed without subdomains.


Wikispecies

Wikispecies is an open, wiki-based, species directory that provides a solution to the problem that there is no central registration of species data. Wikispecies will provide a central, more extensive database for taxonomy. Wikispecies is aimed at the needs of scientific users rather than general users.

Wikicommons

Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) was launched in September 2004, with the goal of providing a central repository for free images, music and, possibly, texts and spoken texts, to be used by all Wikimedia projects. Still in the planning stage, the project will, in future, allow images to be reused across projects.

MediaWiki

MediaWiki is wiki software released under the GPL which is used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects and other sites using MediaWiki.

During the period 21-29 May 2004, all Wikimedia sites have been upgraded to the MediaWiki 1.3 software.

Meta-Wiki

Meta-Wiki, also called shortly meta, is a Mediawiki project portal wiki. Where talking about all of projects, new project, policies, development issues, adminstrative all of wikis.
