About me
My first edit to Wikipedia was in 2006. I've been performing gnomish edits since 2008 as Jtmorgan. I'm also a Teahouse host, a bot wrangler, and a contributor to the research newsletter.
I have a BA in philosophy and classics from St. John's College, and a PhD in Human Centered Design & Engineering from the University of Washington.
My dissertation, Coordinating the Commons: Diversity & Dynamics in Open Collaboration is available open access through UW ResearchWorks .
Areas of Wikipedia that I've studied include discussions around controversial article topics[1][2], Wikipedia policy [3], new editor engagement[4], and the editor decline[5]. I have also performed design research on other online collaboration systems, like this one.
Offline, I am a voracious and omnivorous reader, and a passionately amateurish musician. In my (ever-diminishing) spare time, I also enjoy trail running, kayaking and a good game of racquetball.
My work
With the Learning & Evaluation team I provide design, development, data analytics, and research mentorship for other programs and initatives such as the IdeaLab, the Brazil Catalyst Project, Individual Engagement Grants, and the Wikipedia Education Program.
As a Wikimedia Research Fellow, I helped design and launch the WP:Teahouse, a new user peer-support hub on the English Wikipedia. Info on how Teahouse came about, and why it is the way it is, available here. I also supported other Community Fellowship projects around improving dispute resolution and user help documents.
I started at the Foundation during the 2011 Summer of Research. I worked on several research sprints focused on new editor participation patterns(1,2), and WikiProjects (1,2).
