| about me = My first edit to Wikipedia was in 2006. I've been performing gnomish edits since 2008 as Jtmorgan.

I have a PhD in Human Centered Design & Engineering from the University of Washington and a BA in philosophy and classics from St. John's College.

Areas of Wikipedia that I've studied include discussions around controversial article topics, Wikipedia policy , new editor engagement, and the editor decline. I have also performed design research on other online collaboration systems, like this one.

I am a voracious and omnivorous reader, and a passionately amateurish musician. In my (ever-diminishing) spare time, I also enjoy trail running, kayaking and a good game of racquetball.

| about my work = I work in the design research team. From August 2013 - May 2015, I was part of the Grantmaking department (now part of Community Engagement).

I started working with the Foundation during the 2011 Summer of Research, where I worked on several exploratory research investigations focused on new editor participation patterns(1,2), and WikiProjects (1,2). As a Wikimedia Research Fellow, I helped design and launch the WP:Teahouse, a new user peer-support hub on the English Wikipedia. Info on how Teahouse came about, and why it is the way it is, available here.
