Hi.

Thank you for updating your note here to not include anything about a possible privacy policy violation. I looked at the code for Template:Social accounts and it's fine.

I wouldn't call Mono's changes drastic. He just replaced the social media icons. That whole page is a bit ugly and could use a refresh (unless it's meant to fit inside of some pretty wrapper somewhere...). The view that anyone should be getting prior approval before updating pages is a bit anti-wiki, eh? There can be a healthy BRD cycle here without much issue, I think.

We've now entered the "D" (discussion) stage. So it'd be helpful if you could explain why you didn't like Mono's change (besides the lack of consultation). That way, the changes can be reimplemented appropriately. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:37, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi MZ,

The page in question is a live fundraising page that thousands of our donors see in any given hour. The edits Mono made changed the functionality of the links (from a Facebook 'share' to a Facebook 'like') and also changed the look of the page quite a bit. AFAIK, live fundraising pages are not open for normal editing. Each of these pages has a corresponding talk page which I'd invite you to use, or you can leave a note on my talk page. Most of the fundraising team also hangs out in #wikimedia-fundraising on IRC and would be happy to discuss changes with you there as well :)

Err, are we talking about the same thing? I believe the thank you page has been historically exempt from the "fundraising rule" as it's pretty difficult to mess up fundraising after someone has already donated. :-)

A talk page (such as Template talk:2011FR/Thankyou) is a great venue that you chose not to use in this case. --MZMcBride (talk) 07:39, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

We are talking about the same page :) and the fact remains that it is a live fundraising page. I am unaware of any exemption of live fundraising pages from this "fundraising rule", especially one that all of our donors are specifically brought to during the donation flow. It is the last thing they see during the donation process. We are happy to try out this edit and we're also happy to see incremental changes to pages. Changing link functionality and removing some of the content is more than an incremental change jvandavier 01:03, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

As a neutral outside observer, if I remember correctly from my discussions with both Megan and Zack, most of the fundraising related pages have been transferred to be on donate.wikimedia.org (donatewiki) instead now, which has much more restricted access to the extent that editing is WMF staff-only. Given that the page appears to be quite important, please can you explain why hasn't it been transferred yet to donatewiki, given that the fundraiser is coming up quite soon now?! I discussed this with the team, but it will take a few days to do; we'd prefer to devote the time this will take to other, more important fundraising projects. I think there was an assumption that these mostly-text pages (the FAQ, for instance) would be alright to leave on this wiki without any problems. Forms and such were moved because they can be fragile and possibly include sensitive data jvandavier 01:03, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

• It seems like the WMF is hopelessly dedicated to stifling progress or change of any kind, especially when it comes to modernizing messaging techniques. The wiki format is tired, difficult to use, and can ultimately be linked to the editor problem on enwp - the actual appearance is unattractive and common-sense improvements are systematically rejected. Therefore, I am backing out and archiving this discussion. MZMcBride's point still stands, but it is obvious there is a clearly defined perspective at the WMF right now and this discussion and other community discussions is unlikely to result in any action.
