A message from Wikipedia author LilarojaYou know how we like to say that what makes Wikipedia work are the thousands of volunteers who give their time every day? That's me. I'm one of them.
Why do I do it? Well, basically, I love Wikipedia. Everyone who volunteers or edits or contributes does, and if you're reading this right now, you probably do, too. I can't think of a single time when I wanted to know something and Wikipedia let me down. There's nothing else in the world quite like it, where so many people come together to share knowledge freely, just for the joy of building something together. Wikipedia is a living thing, like a flower. It changes and grows every day – ten years ago when Jimmy Wales founded Wikipedia, there's no way he could have guessed what it would become. And it's us who did it – you and me, everyone who contributes time or knowledge or money to keep Wikipedia alive. Together, we made it the 5th most popular website in the world – but it's not a big corporation like the other big sites. It's something we built, something we build every day. As someone who loves Wikipedia, I'd like to ask you to help us protect what we have made by donating to the Wikimedia Foundation. It's up to us to nurture this living, breathing, growing, beautiful creation. Our community together can keep Wikipedia free to use and free of advertising. We can make sure that Wikipedia stays strong and independent. I love Wikipedia the way it is, and I want it to keep what makes it special while continuing to grow and evolve. Will you help make that happen with a gift today? Thank you, Lilaroja Oliva, Spain |
